Holy Sexual Tension Batman
Project Runway: 17.4 Survive in Style (Safe Looks)
Designer: Venny Etienne
Materials: Tarp, Utility Rings, Camouflage Tarp, Rope
I feel like I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Venny Etienne is my dark horse pick to go to Fashion Week this season. His stuff is sharp and cool, and he clearly has good taste. I love this look. I would wear it as is. The tarp and camouflage materials are tailored impeccably, and I like how he used the utility rings and rope for detailing. It’s just a very smart look overall.
Designer: Garo Sparo
Materials: Bungee Cords, Fishing Lures
Oh Garo Sparo, this week you proved that you have taste and talent. This gown is beautifully and impeccably made. My mom pointed out that it’s not very practical for people in real life, and I had no answer because she’s right but this is Project Runway. Making clothes for real people is not the goal.
Designer: Jamall Osterholm
Materials: Sleeping Bag, Umbrella, Thermal Blanket
Mom: The old comforter material is back! Why are they obsessed with it? It’s just awful.
Me: *shrugs because I don’t understand it either*
I am going to call out Jamall every time he uses ugly puffer fabric because I hate it. It’s not flattering, and I can’t imagine anyone buying clothes made out of that material. For this challenge, it makes sense, but I have Jamall on watch. Ugly comforter marieral aside, this look is frankly bizarre. I don’t understand the styling. She looks like an alien. I like that the model is mostly covered, but I hate the outfit. Why add leaves? What’s with the weird headpiece.
Designer: Tessa Clark
Materials: Rope, Netting, String, Bark
Tessa gets some points from my for making a loom and weaving her own fabric, but I take issue with the fact that her model is barely wearing any clothes. She has a shawl, a bark bra, and a skirt made of netting on. It’s cold and raining! Why not design her something warm, especially for a survivalist challenge? This episode made me a little mad.
Designer: Sebastian Grey
Materials: Leaves, Duct Tape
Once again, Sebastian proves he can brilliantly make clothes. This gown is only made out of leaves and duct tape?!? How did he even... It’s incredibly chic and looks like fabric.
Designer: Bishme Cromartie
Materials: Sleeping Bag, Mat, Branches, Rocks
First, kudos to Bishme for making his model a jacket that looks both cute and warm out of the sleeping bag. Props to him! Does his model still have bare legs? Yes, but I can forgive that because that skirt is seriously awesome. You can barely tell it is made out of a yoga mat and adorned with branches and rocks. He transformed his materials well.
Designer: Lela Orr
Materials: Bungee Cords, Tarp, Umbrella
I really love the woven top out of the cords, but I’m not crazy about the skirt. My mom loved the skirt and the top. I kind of wish everyone who did not dress their models for the weather was in the bottom, but alas that did not happen because too many models aren’t wearing enough clothes for the rainy woods.

Project Runway: 17.4 Survive in Style (Bottom Looks)
Designer: Kovid Kapoor
Materials: Sleeping Bag, Mat, Tarp
Though I adore Kovid, I absolutely hated his look this week. I thought it was the worst of the looks in the bottom. I hate how he used the sleeping bag material. I hate that this outfit is not in any way functional, and I just do not understand the sleeves. At the very least, his model looks warm and is fully covered. That’s something.
Designer: Sonia Kasparian
Materials: Duct Tape, Thermal Blanket, Branches, Netting
I like the idea of Sonia’s dress and how she tried to use the materials, but in the end her model couldn’t walk in the dress. She tripped on the runway and got tangled in the material. I think that says all I need to say about the success of this outfit.
Designer: Afa Ah Loo
Materials: Maps, Hammock, Duct Tape, Rope
Oh, Afa. I wasn’t in love with his look, but I thought he’d be safe. Was this the worst look on the runway? No. I agree with the judges that what his model is wearing doesn’t fit with the theme of the challenge, but I think it is pretty. I also agree that there is not enough clothes in this look. Poor Mimi was shivering during deliberations and had to be given a blanket. Still, I think Afa is a better designer than Kovid, who has been on the bottom twice, and deserved a second chance.
Project Runway: 17.4 Survive in Style (Top Looks)
Designer: Rakan Shams Aldeen
Materials: Sleeping Bag, Gauze
Mom: That costume girl made that outfit.
Me: No.
Mom: *looks at again* Are you sure?
Me: Yes, I’m sure.
Rakan’s look does sort of look like something Hester would make. For Rakan, who was in the bottom last week, that is a good thing. I like the vibe of this look. I kind of hate the sleeping bag material, but I like how he used it. I love that the top is actually constructed with a zipper and not just wrapped around her. I also think the styling is really cool.
Designer: Hester Sunshine
Materials: Bungee Cords, Camouflage Tarp, Carabiners
I just may like Hester after all. I think that she used her materials smartly. The corset top is insane; I can’t believe she did this out of bungee cords. I also think the skirt out of the tarp material is cool. I echo Elaine’s concerns about cultural appropriation but do not think Hester has crossed any lines yet.
Designer: Renee Hill
Materials: Tarp, Backpack, Cowhide
I was honestly surprised that Renee won this challenge. I was not crazy about her outfit; I thought it could be on the bottom for being too literal. However, my mom loved it. She thought it was cool, and so I had to reconsider. To Renee’s credit, she is the only designer who made clothes their model could survive in. Her model is fully covered and looks warm. I’m still not in love with this look, but I understand the win now.
