Mummies in the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo, Italy. The monks began mummifying their brothers in 1599
James S. Shapiro, please expect a strongly worded email because in your book 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare you called Twelfth Night
“somewhat formulaic”
as well as
“safer and less inspired”
than As You Like It. And look, I’m sure you have well researched, academic reasons for saying this, especially when looking at the scripts as pure text, but I’ll argue the following:
Twelfth Night is better theater. It’s better to watch, it’s better to design, and it’s better to act. No ensemble member has to yell “LOOK ITS HYMEN THE GOD OF MARRIAGE” at the end of Twelfth Night. As You Like It with good music is fun, but when the music is okay or worse, it drags.
I was describing As You Like It to a friend and they said “oh it’s Twelfth Night but worse”. I will not go this far. I am not an As You Like It hater. But I will say some of what you call “safer” in Twelfth Night, I see as streamlining.
Am I biased? Of course! But still, as a certified Twelfth Night Enjoyer, expect my strongly worded email!!!
