This exquisite miniature portrait of Mary was painted when she was about seventeen, during her marriage to Francis, Dauphin of France, who became Francis II in 1559 and died in 1560. The portrait is first attested in the personal collection of Charles I of England.
François Clouet, son of Burgundian artist Jean Clouet, was the most celebrated French portraitist of his day, known for his depictions of members of the royal family and of other nobles throughout Europe. His portrait of Elisabeth of Austria, now in the Louvre, inspired Claude Levi-Strauss in developing his anthropological theories of art.
