going through the music we made in the beginning, almost all of it feels immature. the thoughtlessness and naivete of bad mixes and sloppy arrangements and too many or too little ideas and not enough of this or that so from the first second of playback you’re already cringing, dying to turn it off; making art is funny in that way. in that it can mean so much to you at one point in your life and really make you feel like you’re slitting your proverbial wrists in a proverbial public, and then a few weeks (or days, maybe hours) go by and for no clear reason you’ve reasoned to yourself that maybe you’ve created maybe the worst thing ever created.
the measure most offensive of all in our early work is the amount of ego. you get the sense that the composer just so desperately wants to seem interesting that they’ve overplayed their hand, measure by bleating measure. by they i mean us. the music we were making, honestly, sounds shit by any critical measure.
as we approach our sixth year anniversary, its unavoidable to do a bit of reflecting, and from this vantage point and these older ears, its kind of hard to know what we were thinking. the gall we had for starting a project like this in the first place. i guess when you’re young, risk assessment isn’t exactly a forte,
i know we sort of started talking about starting the project it in the middle of a really humid summer, sami and i, because i was walking my bike over the corner of 11th and Monroe NW and we both had shorts and sunglasses on so it must’ve been hot, but more acute details like time of day or day of week slip through my recall, it doesn’t matter. and maybe andrew had planted the idea in our minds or maybe he had only affirmed them for us when we finally found the guts to voice them out loud, it doesn’t matter. i guess events like that have to happen in life for people to believe in things like fate and god and such, random and chaotic stuff has to look like a path of connected and meaningful signs. in any case finding aforementioned guts would have been a nightmare without his booming yet dry affirmations and matter of fact shrugs, he would shout like well why the hell not? and well, the only answers to that question would be fear and/or laziness, which a person can either tolerate, or a person cannot.
Great new (pay-what-you-like!) compilation from 1432 R, the Washington, D.C. label that brought us Mikael Seifu. This track ‘Want It Bad’ is particularly good, plinks and snippets of samples over a steady beat and bassline with buried, funky-sad vocals—think Matthew Dear or DJ Koze.
