Today’s Alumni Memory comes from Aiméezing!

As we celebrate Season 10 (continuing June 11 with Battle for the Boot X, between the Chicks Ahoy! and The Gore-Gore Rollergirls, ticket info here: http://goo.gl/GWpb08), we continue to look back at our history with the aid of some of our alumni. This former skater goes back to the very beginning, and was a big part - read on to find out how - in her team's first Boot championship!

Derby Name: Aiméezing

ToRD years: 2006-09 Chicks Ahoy!

What attracted you to ToRD? I played a lot of sports when I was younger, but became distracted with teenage-hood and stopped altogether. As an adult, roller derby caught my eye, and it felt like a home-coming, and a celebration of alternative lifestyles and body types, and a way to re-connect with my own physicality. I also liked befriending the girls, and the hitting, and the great outfits!

Favourite ToRD memory: My favourite memory is bittersweet. I'll never forget the championship game of 2008, when the Chicks Ahoy! beat the undefeated Gore-Gore Rollergirls! I was skating jammer position for the Chicks, and there was only 12 minutes left in the game. We were barely ahead in points, when I broke my ankle in a fall! I couldn't bear the thought of losing, so I skated off the track without telling anyone what had happened. I knew everyone would take a knee, and a hush would fall over the arena, and my team might lose our drive in the final moments of this momentous game. Instead, I skated off track, sat down, and watched the next line-up start the jam before I said anything. We took the boot home that night, and I was carried into the after party celebrations, up a bazillion stairs, like a bride over a threshold.

What are you doing now? I am a working artist (Mée Rose) performing music, and making videos, and other art. I also look after small children in my home daycare!

Derby Name: Bambi #33

ToRD years: 2006-13 The Gore-Gore Rollergirls and CN Power

What attracted you to ToRD? Flipping channels one day in 2005, I stumbled upon the A&E show, Rollergirls and immediately fell in love… but with what exactly, I didn’t know. I had never seen anything like it before and me, being super into punk/rock n roll, as well as being quite a reckless girl made this weird activity on rollerskates very, VERY appealing to me. I loved the alternative and underground culture that it created, I loved how theatrical and outlandish it was and most of all, I loved how friggin BADASS the girls playing it were. I had never really been into sports at all, but I HAD to do this.

Favourite ToRD memory: There are so many good memories and I’m sure I’m forgetting some good ones but here are a few: - Competing in WFTDA D1 playoffs for the first time ever with CN Power. We worked so hard to get to that point, the highest of any of our derby careers. We were at our athletic and competitive peak. It was a very cool experience to play this sport in moments like that, with skaters on that level. We did pretty damn good too! - Initiating new baby Gores onto the team in a back alley behind a slaughter house in the middle of the night. We blindfolded them and made them drink whiskey shots while pouring (fake) blood on them - Wearing lingerie as uniforms for the first year or two - Wearing bathing suits as uniforms - Meeting some of the coolest, craziest, and interesting people, some of which will be lifetime friends

What are you doing now? Although I finished with derby in 2013, I’ve been skating street and ramps since then. I skate for the Moxi Skate Team, as well as with my own local crew of babes - Bad Union Skate, which include other former ToRD skaters Dusty, Foxy, Android and Kandy Barr! We’ve got lots of cool stuff in the works if you’re into that kinda stuff and you can check us out at @badunionskate on Instagram for a taste of things to come.

Derby Name: EMROCK #14

ToRD years: 2006-08 Smoke City Betties (whom I named!)

What attracted you to ToRD? I got hooked on The Rollergirls reality series, and was like HOLY S*** I NEED TO DO THIS! And that's what got me googling roller derby in Toronto. I was one of the originals, started before ToRD was a thing. Joined forces with Kandy Barr and some other girls and we started the Betties, we joined forces with ToRD later on.

Favourite ToRD memory: Road trip to Austin, Texas to visit the TXRD girls! We skated their banked track, partied with them. It was awesome!

What are you doing now? I work full-time in the admin office of a student co-op building. Live with my boyfriend of 19 years and our fur babies :)

Today’s Alumni Memory comes to us from Santilly in Yo Face!

Here is another alumni memory from our ongoing series - this alumnus is a multi-sport threat who once played in a rugby tournament on the same weekend as skating at Beast of the East!

Derby Name: Santilly in Yo Face

ToRD years: 2010 D-VAS, 2011-13 Death Track Dolls

What attracted you to ToRD? Contact Sports... Contact Sports... Contact sports

Favourite ToRD memory: Winning MVP my second year on the Dolls in a game against the Chicks. Mostly, because they outright destroyed my little jammer soul in a game the year before. And being part of the fearsome four (2013 Dolls jammers).

What are you doing now? Back in T.Dot after pursuing (and completing) a dream of playing professional rugby!
