Times have changed & #JamaicaBay isn't as threatened. On our @100rescities #100rcsummit #livinglab we saw long time pressures & recent efforts to continue the rehabilitation of the bay. But we still can't eat the shellfish. This 1917 illustration hearkens back to the days when 50 million gallons of sewage flowed into the bay each day, resulting in typhoid cases and the closing of shellfish beds in 1921. They remain closed, though the bay has improved water conditions. - - Jamaica Bay has lessons for other coastal communities and the potential for #urbanbiodiversity and #coastalresilience. #HurricaneSandy offered additional challenges and solutions for local residents and the larger region and beyond. #resilience #climateresilience #resilientcities #precovery #100rclife (at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center)
