a female, maybe american, that seems to enjoy music
Jan 25th, 12.37pm W 26th St, New York
I’ve been interning since June in a studio that is between art galleries in chelsea. i enjoy going to art galleries but i actually haven’t done that at all since i started itp. i went today to the studio for the first time after the break and after a long talk yesterday with Paula, i thought it would be interesting to ask people that i see with a certain frequency but i never got to know them/ they never got to know me. so i decided i was going to ask the men who runs the elevator. we normally have small talks until i get to the 8th floor or when i go down to grab lunch / go home.
he is from guiana actually - it’s one of the countries that brazil has frontiers with in the north. i know his kids were born in the us, and if i’m not wrong only his parents live there. he is very polite.
but then, as the elevator door opened and i was ready to start talking with him i saw he wasn’t there. he was not working today and i needed to change my plan. as i left the building, i saw this very classy lady (i’d assume she is one of the chelsea art women) and decided to approach her. even though she looked very serious (maybe she takes herself more serious than she should?) i didn’t find this too intimidating. i had my headphones on and as i got closer to her, i took them out and stopped her.
me: hi. if you take a second, what would you say about me? classy lady (making slow pauses, looking at me up and down): ahm. an. (looking at my face:) nothing. a female. i’d assume you are american. you seem to enjoy music. (looking at my headphones). (looking at my face again:) what do you think i am? me: ahn you’re stylish for sure. i’d say you’re heading to work - maybe you work with art? she nodded. classy lady: is this for a project? me: yes, i’m doing 100 days of asking people i don’t know what they think i am. classy lady: well you need to say a lot more. take care. and just like this she left me, walking towards the Hudson river.
“a human being?”
Jan 24th, 9.13am Washington Square
bad weather made me leave my bike at school yesterday night so today i was subway commuting. from W 4th stop to the back door of the Tisch building, the streets were pretty empty and it was pouring. As i passed by the arcs, I saw a lady on her gym clothing walking on my direction. she had headphones hanging, only one of the ear buds was actually on her ear. as we made eye contact, i moved my mouth as if i was about to say something when she stopped to listen to me.
me: what would you say about me? she: what do you mean? me: whatever you feel like she: a human being? me: yeah that works she: i don’t know haha me: no that’s enough, thanks!
think i’m getting back on track on approaching people. i’ll try to extend the conversation to understand what people mean when they say what they say.
