"You see, the inside of your Driflind exists of multiple gas chambers, seperated by layers of a volatile organic compound (voc) . Just like with hot air balloons, we call these layers "envelopes". These envelopes keep Driflind from completely deflating, going haywire and eventually crashing if one of the layers should ever rip. Driflind can regulate the gas between these layers, which enables it to go up and down in the air, and keeps it afloat if air pressure or temperature changes. Each Drifblim has about three to six of these layers at all times, and generates new ones by a process of deposition involving soul particles.
