Living in excess -- or -- Quarter Life Crisis
we are wallowing in the abundance of our youth
splashing in the excesses of --too much--
We careen through these years
tilting and twirling in drunken angles,
shouting and singing the strain of feeling -this much- into our voice boxes
the lid of whatever we have contained--
constrained ourselves inside of.
Your eyes will shine too brightly
we will laugh too loudly,
and my heart will burst too quickly.
We will tell ourselves we can find immortality at the end of a long drive
in the corners of closely held conversations
we will be reckless with our innocence.
We will swear like sailors,
we will eat too much butter
and too many dishes better served in moderation.
Our arteries will grow thick coats of built up gluttony,
as too many winter layers of blubber settle under our skin.
Our livers will groan under the alcohol drunk
Our backs will get too burnt
from a sun that was just too strong,
Itching ourselves out of our too-tight skin
we will peel off the impatient layers far too soon.
I will want to lie next to you too often
and you will never want to want me quite enough to make anything happen.
We will exist in overdoses of happiness and despair,
excesses of life pouring out of us, over us, into us,
as we grow bruised and burgeoning in the foolish feasting of our early 20’s.
