The more I think about it the more I think that had Arthur found out about Merlins magic earlier/differently he would have reacted the same way someone would to their best friend telling them they have a problem with addiction. He would have told Merlin that its all gonna be ok and there's still hope and he can help him.
Because his Merlin is still so sweet and kind and clearly in pain so he can't have been corrupted yet. And Arthur can help him stop before it corrupts him. Arthur probably feels guilty as well, blaming himself for Merlin turning to magic. I've always thought it would be interesting if Arthur suspected Merlin of using magic to heal him in the Crystal cave episode(ironically one of the few times he'd be wrong) because he felt like he was dying and then wakes up fine to a clearly distressed Merlin. So thinking about things like that and Merlins defence that he uses his magic for him just makes Arthur feel worse and responsible for his best friend hurting himself.
And ofcourse, this reaction would completely devastate Merlin.
