D-Damn...
...
What that tongue do?
Do you think that Zuko was a jerk to Azula in the comics?
Ohohoho...yes. I do. Very much so.
Regardless over whether or not Azula actually "abused" Zuko (I for one strongly believe she didn't)...Zuko's actions were completely unacceptable in every sense of the word. You could even argue what he did to her was even worse than what she did to him in the series. Let us count the ways:
Throws her in an abusive asylum with no indication of actually releasing her
Appears before her in full Fire Lord regalia and on a throne, something that would've triggered her issues
Only refers to Ursa as "his" mother instead of "their" mother
Locks her in a room with her abuser
Let's his friends antagonize her and gaslight her when she retaliates
Dangles her over a goddamn cliff and blaming her for everything that went wrong with his life
Attacks her when she's in the middle of another breakdown
Redirects lightning at her instead of into the sky
...yeah. Zuko was a grade A jackass. It gets even worse since Azula is at her lowest point, not too dissimilar to Zuko during Book 1...and he decides to essentially kick her while she's down. And while we're at it, his behavior gets even worse when you consider that Azula appears again as a terrorist in the next comic trilogy. This is a series that constitutes that change comes at our lowest point. Zuko essentially browbeat Azula into thinking she was a monster at her lowest point...which she potentially internalized in the worst way imaginable. AKA. Zuko might be partially responsible for the mess Azula causes in S&S.
And even worse, considering how he treats Azula as a tool to be discarded, is completely inconsiderate of her needs, threatens her, actually makes her visibly afraid at a few points, AND reinforces the notion she's an irredeemable monster...you know who he reminds me of in how he treats Azula?
...oh yeah. I went there. And it's a reason I couldn't forgive Zuko for a long time when he essentially became as bad as his father in terms of family, yet we're supposed to AGREE WITH HIM.
...sorry. Zuko's behavior towards Azula in the comics was really triggering. In short, I do think Zuko was a grade A jackass to Azula. And it kind of disturbs me about how some people think his behavior was acceptable. I'm sorry, but "an eye for an eye" doesn't work when you become just as bad, if not worse. And it ESPECIALLY ticks me off when Zuko is written to continue the cycle of abuse rather than breaking it.
Thanks Yang.
