Bees. She’s went and built him a beehive for Valentine’s for no other reason than that it would be nice to be able to add fresh honey to his tea and biscuits. And maybe because she once had seen him hovering in the back garden in an empty space and thought a bright splash of yellow and a decent hive would look lovely there.

James had helped her most days, while he was at the pet shop and Marlene sat in her chair and gave orders. She went as far as to order him a keepers get up, patterned in yellow and orange and green and it’s set out on the bench when she leads him into the garden with her hands over his eyes.

“It’s no’-- conventional--” she laughs and comes around to press a soft kiss to his lips, telling him to keep his eyes closed for a moment more.
