Hey there love, 

I’m sorry to hear that you have experienced this, it definitely isn’t pleasant!

I can tell you straight off that you aren’t alone in this, okay? It’s actually quite common and I’ve experienced it myself. 

I’m no expert but it sounds as though you had an episode of sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis happens when you are waking up (or less commonly falling asleep) where you feel unable to move or talk. It can last a few seconds or a few minutes and you often see a figure or feel that someone is there with you. 

The first time it happened to me, I thought there was someone in the house and I tried to scream to let my family know but I couldn’t open my mouth or move at all. The second time it happened I felt like I had fainted and when I woke up from this ‘faint’ I couldn’t move or shout for help. They lasted a minute or so and I haven’t had it since. 

It is so scary when it happens, but if it happens again, try to remind yourself that it will pass soon enough and if you feel that someone is there, tell yourself that it is not real and that you are safe. 

If it happens a lot, you can visit your doctor and they can give you a short course of medication to try and stop it but the best treatment is often better sleep hygiene and making sure that you get plenty of sleep, as it is often triggered by sleep deprivation. It can also be brought on by stress and anxiety.
