The firm response from his wife had Rhys’ shoulders quickly losing tension. As soon as Amy said anything about the baby or that she was feeling off at all, he couldn’t help the worry that welled up in his chest. In fact, there had been multiple unnecessary visits to stat-care because of it. Still, he couldn’t help the soft, slightly worried frown on his face now as his wife assured him she was all right and so was the baby. His brows only furrowed when she asked for his hand, a little hesitant and confused at first.
Slowly, he laid his hand against hers and allowed her to pull it close. He moved closer, just enough that she could rest his palm against her stomach. However, as soon as his hand was there, his eyes grew wide and he found himself stepping a little closer. He was pretty sure... Not positive, but... Yes! He felt it. He felt a soft tap of their son’s foot, the small shifting of his tiny body. In an instant, he felt tears well up in his eyes, his chest swelling with emotion as his breath caught in his throat. A soft smile quickly breached his expression, a light, breathless laugh fluttering past his lips. Without even thinking, he bent down on his knees, quietly resting his forehead against his wife’s stomach and closing his eyes for a moment. He was beaming. It had taken so long for him to have this moment. He had tried and tried to find their baby each time he rest a hand on her stomach, but he had never felt a thing. It had him worried, honestly. What if the baby didn’t like him? What if he wasn’t OK? Now, though, those worries quickly washed away, a huge weight lifted off his shoulders when he felt the little tike move.
Tears stained his cheeks as he looked up at his wife again, still beaming, another soft titter brushing past his lips. Their baby was healthy. Their tiny little miracle was alive and well. His wife was healthy. They were both there, they were both breathing, and for a moment everything felt OK... More than OK. For the first time in what felt like forever, he felt like he knew what it meant to be alive. He had found his purpose again through his wife, through his baby, through their perfect little family given to them by God... A gift beyond anything he could possibly imagine.
“ I love you, “ he breathed out as he stood up again, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek, heart pounding in his chest with sheer elation. “ I love you, and I love our little guy in there. “ He gently poked her belly, then wrapped his arms around her waist. He just couldn’t stop smiling, his eyes squinting into small slits against his cheeks.
