Reading Queen Henrietta Maria’s letters regarding baby Charles II is a cute experience. I mean, she often calls him “ugly and large” but one has to remember she was only 19-20 when Charles was born and he was the first child (save for a baby that had only lived a few hours) that she’d ever had. She matured about children with age (though some have argued that Charles would never be her favourite, and felt the brunt of it, despite being the eldest and the heir, and eventually, the king).
