“In a post on the Making Game of Thrones site, costume designer Michele Clapton revealed the meaning behind the Stark kids’ wardrobe in Season 7. And Sansa’s costume has a particularly sad backstory. It turns out her repressive wardrobe is meant to put up a wall after how horribly she has been treated by men like Joffrey and Ramsay, and it serves as a warning for any other man who comes near her.

Clapton particularly liked the detail around Sansa’s belt. “This is her taking back control of her body. I designed it to wrap around over her side-laced dress to represent the absolute removal of any possible physical touch,” she said. She also noted that it’s a sign that Baelish shouldn’t try any sudden moves. “Her dresses are also tightly-laced on, incredibly difficult to remove; it’s a message to Littlefinger,” she said.

But there is one part of her look that’s positive, Clapton says, and is a sign of her ambition. “Sansa’s cape, for instance, represents Ned and her desire to take on more of a leadership role at Winterfell,” she said.
