NEW CHAPTER: 04. YARD OF BLONDE GIRLS.

At the junction between Fountain and North Fuller, Valerie turned right and adopted deeper breaths. The address was burnt on the back wall of her skull, and she didn't need the napkin as she slowed before a white matchbox house. Reaching across the way, she churned the window down.

It wasn't much of a house. Perhaps a large garage. Bodies piled the lawn—a small patch of dead grass—and kegs dotted the negative space. From a half-dozen erected speakers, Queensrÿche thrummed. Valerie rolled her eyes and kept moving, pulling flush to the first open patch along the curb and cutting the engine.

But she didn't get out. Not yet. Regret made its return around her wrists, vying for her ankles, and it all felt stupid. She didn't know anybody but the band, they'd hardly have the time—

"Valerie? S'that you?"

She swiveled toward the call. "Izzy? Hey."
