What was the point of using her fists when she could command a storm?
ZOYA NAZYALENSKY in SHADOW AND BONE (2021)
You're going to fail a lot before things work out. Even though you fail over and over again, you have to try every time. You can't quit because you're afraid you'll fail.

whats wrong with scarjo
Iβm a little headache-y but thereβs two things that I remember:
She took the role of an Asian character,Β Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. Then she claimed that participating in whitewashing* was feminism, βhaving a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is such a rare opportunityβ. That role was not going to a man and thatβs not even considering that Asian men are also underrepresented in movies, more so than white women*. There were even reports that they tried using CGI on ScarJo to make her look more Asian... instead of yellowface, perhaps they should have tried casting an Asian woman?Β
*ScarJo comes fromΒ Ashkenazi Jewish descent but I think she also identifies as white.
Sandra Ohβs speech at the Golden Globes pokes fun at the whole situation, sayingΒ βCrazy Rich Asians is nominated tonight. It is the first studio film with an Asian lead since Ghost In The Shell and Aloha.β (Aloha was whitewashed by Emma Stone.)
The next thing sheβs done, on a related note, was that she accepted the role of a trans man. She. Is. A. Cisgender. Woman. Even though she dropped out of the film, Rug & Tug, the fact that she was willing to do so further displays how little she cares about minorities.
About this, she initially saidΒ she couldΒ βplay any person, or any tree, or any animalβ but later clarifiedΒ βI personally feel that, in an ideal world, any actor should be able to play anybody and [a]rt, in all forms, should be immune to political correctness. That is the point I was making, albeit didnβt come across that way. I recognize that in reality, there is a wide spread discrepancy amongst my industry that favors Caucasian, cis gendered actors and that not every actor has been given the same opportunities that I have been privileged to. I continue to support, and always have, diversity in every industry and will continue to fight for projects where everyone is included.βΒ
This is a massive load of bullshit and continues to be a big yikes because marginalized people have very clearly and directly told her how best to support or fight for our groups. No one should be given immunity from being criticized for their actions, since no oneβs actions are in complete isolation from the rest of the world. Especially not world-famous actresses who understand that representation is important, but like, only for women.

βIt was great! I mean the duffer brothers are so nice, smart, generous, and collaborative. The whole cast is really kind, grounded, and smart. It was a much easier transition than I thought it would be.β
