Posters for Robert Eggers Nosferatu (2024)
Friend showed me a post arguing for Nosferatu being about sexual assault blah blah, with someone arguing that its "about Victorian repression" about sexual assault , tells me all there is to know they don't know the nitty gritty of Repression, especially for this era, as much as they love to prattle on about.
In the scenes before the climax of the movie, Thomas and Ellen are in their room, where Ellen at her wits end finally reveals the fact why Orlok is here and how he knows what he wants her. She is tired of running away from him and wants the confrontation to happen. She is fed up of Thomas assuming she is being hunted because of what he did, refusing to listen to her. She wants him to listen to her own culpability and accept her for what she is- she exposes her psychic powers, even straight up taunts him by comparing him, showing him his inferiority to Orlok, attacking his male ego, showing a true but small glimpse of the anger she has against his "impotency" against Orlok and what she gets is the exact wrong reaction she expected- Thomas labeling Orlok as some kind of predatory attacker , not acknowledging Ellen's power 's agency, labelling her as :always pure in his eyes:
"I sought company, I sought....tenderness"
"Don't you understand? He took me as his lover and ...now he has come back"
"Don't touch me! I am not to be touched!"
"You sold me for gold"
"Our love was supposed to be sacred! but where is it!"
"But you never listen! We should have never married, we are already dead!"
She shows him ONE GLIMPSE of her anger and her "ugliness" and he RUNS TOWARDS A FUCKING DOCTOR. This is when she changes her tune, from blaming him for never listening , from explaining her desires to now CRAWLING ON HER KNEES TO NEVER LEAVE HER
" I will be good. I Promise"
and goading him to have sex with her to assuage his broken pride that she destroyed just now. She realized that she WILL NEVER BE ACCEPTED- her anger, her desires, her wishes will never be really listened to. From then on she would never trust him with her intentions again.
He will leave her if she is true to herself...so she has to be false. Look at the relief on his face when she crawls and begs him
The irony of that he did all of that after he attacked her himself while she is throes of her "fits" as far as he understands it, and the story "rewards" him by showing him how he has lost her spiritually to Orlok- her visage as Orlok's bloody bride
Its very different from the reaction she would get from Dr Von Franz who by naming her a would be Priestess acknowledges both her nobility and her powers. She never got that from Thomas
Why?? Because Victorian repression is so bad that it would prefer a woman be raped and assaulted to preserve her image as a willingly chaste and pure person than assume she had sex willingly with someone out of bounds of marriage. This is why Tess De'Urberville calls itself a tale of a pure woman because it makes people assume Tess is pure of heart, she had no intention to be with Alec, he "must" have assaulted her. Its not as "good" as being literal virgin but its better in their eyes than a woman getting outside the bounds of marriage and exercising that autonomy ( like how Countess Adeline did , who was shunned by Queen Victoria and the polite society for becoming mistress then becoming wife to her future husband). Speaking of Tess ...
This is what Ellen knows, she knows that Thomas would never accept her as she is and hence reverts back to the role of victim he sees her in and decides to never speak to him ever again about what she is and what she intends to do. So yeah, none yall know wtf you are talking about about facets of repression the story and the era its set in.
