/ i know it in my heart that dove and helena met sometime during no man's land because dove would've stayed in gotham, they wouldn't have had much of a choice honestly. their entire life is there, their foster family was there, all of their friends were there (except for karina who left very early on). there was nowhere for them to go if they left gotham. they have no family in the states that would've taken them in (their mother did try and get them to leave the city but they refused), they were aging out of the foster system so whatever new placement they might have gotten wouldn't have been ideal and that's IF things were together enough to find placements for foster kids which i doubt they were + they would've been so inundated with kids to place that someone like dove would have easily slipped through the cracks, and its not like they had the money to take care of themself somewhere else.
so they stayed in gotham and they do their part to help out their neighborhood. even if it means making deals and doing things they otherwise wouldn't. even if it took them so far away from their neighborhood that they ran into huntress.
and i do think dove would've been someone that groups would think was useful. they're quick, street smart, charming, and a good thief. they could talk people into trading things or giving them stuff they need or they could just take it, they're GOOD at that. and they'd been a runner before, when they were younger and in between placements and just trying to survive and the easiest (only) work they could find was taking stuff from point a to point b for whoever was willing to pay them.
but they do have lines they wouldn't cross yknow? theyve got no problem stealing from an asshole or taking back something that was already stolen but they won't take anything from kids or families or people obviously need it more than they do. somehow they're able to maintain being a good / kind person during the horrors that are no man's land and i am gonna think about that for awhile

/ as im reading stuff leading up to no man's land, i'm realizing that dove has probably seen some shit. and they'd definitely be messed up during contagion and legacy when people are dying from the clench because they're someone with a natural immunity to it
(listen. i just feel in my bones they'd be immune to it. maybe just because they are, maybe its somehow a speedster thing. we just don't know. plus it makes sense for their character to ME and thats what matters)
like they're doing everything they can to help people but they're still a teenager and there's only so much they can do. and through all of it they're wishing that they could get sick – not because they want to die or anything but because it isn't fair that everyone around them is getting sick or losing people and there they are, perfectly fine when they don't deserve to be. because thats one of their biggest flaws, they don't think they deserve good things. they don't think they deserve to succeed. they don't think that they deserve to survive when other people that have less than them are dying.
it's a lot like how they believe they aren't deserving of love or a family because they've already had those things and there are people out there who haven't. its why they'd run from good placements as a kid because they didn't deserve that second chance, not when there's another kid that never got a chance at all. they think because they had their dad (for as short a time as they did) that they don't get to have something like that again.

the first one:
the dove baek bag!
- they carry a ton of stuff, some of it for themself but a lot of it is for their son because they have him about 80% of the time and toddlers need a lot of stuff always
- snacks, juice boxes, wet wipes, and kleenex are all for sparrow pretty much. because kids can be messy and snacks are helpful and/or a great distraction depending on the situation. that being said sometimes they do eat sparrow's goldfish... it can't be helped.
- they should carry more snacks for themself because their metabolism is so fast that they require a mess of calories just to be chill but they aren't the priority. sparrow is.
- water bottle is for them! they know they should use a reusable one but sometimes its quicker to grab a plastic one. plus they can steal them from work so thats a plus.
- other sparrow accessories include: stuffed dragon (or whatever plushie is on rotation) because they MUST go on adventures too sparrow said so (and if dove carries one around when sparrow isnt with them and takes goofy little pictures to show him later well.. thats their business), coloring book + crayons (including random stray ones they're always finding) for a quick and easy distraction, same goes for the book :) they dont read to him a lot but he likes the pictures and once he's a bit older he likes trying to read to them (dove smiles so fucking big and cant stop saying how proud of him they are the first time he reads an entire story to them without messing up any words because they're just so fucking happy that he doesn't struggle like they do), and random spare change of socks because sometimes he just loses his socks and they dont get it because they can keep track of his shoes if he kicks them off but those goddamn socks man. those things vanish. (and we're gonna pretend those are socks for a small human okay)
- miscellaneous other things include: random crumpled up papers from who knows where, their wallet and bus pass, loose money that they've thrown in there at one point or another with the intention of putting it up, keys to their apartment & jay's, phone charger + phone (cracked phone screen dove is so real to me), fidget spinner (it was a gift. they pretend they dont like it but they do), wired earbuds that you'll have to pry from their cold dead hands (theyve not failed them yet. you will not catch dove with bluetooth earbuds), hand sanitizer, and a first aid kit because they can be clumsy + sometimes sparrow or someone needs a bandaid + they're a first responder so? they carry they basics in case they're ever in a situation where someone needs first aid.
- their backpack was picked out by sparrow. same with the kirby and cat pin and the little fish guy. they/them and pride flag patch were them though. they also have a mlm flag pin but i forgot to look for one.
second one:
the akira nomura bag!
- she carries significantly less stuff because they don't have a lot of stuff in the first place and her daughter is older and carries her own backpack or bag most of the time (really akira ends up carrying it after awhile because she gets tired and it gets heavy after awhile since she puts so much stuff in it. akira is hopelessly endeared by her and most of the time can't say no to her because the Guilt of not being a present parent for the first like 5 years of natsuki's life)
- she's got pretty basic stuff as well. like epipens because You Never Know even though her allergy isnt that common i think? (she's allergic to avocados idk how often you just run into those) but she's anxious about it and likes to be prepared and ibuprofen for bad pain days (she has stronger stuff at home but ibuprofen helps a little)
- extra face mask in case anything happens to the one she's wearing :)
- umbrella because she's Prepared
- assortment of sweets because she has a hell of a sweet tooth and likes snacking + a capri sun because she had never had those and now that she has she kind of loves them
- notebook + random sheet of paper + a pen that i forgot to add + a basic tablet for communication. she's not used to having alternate methods of communication available when she's nonverbal so she doesnt have an actual aac device (plus i think she'd be too stubborn to use one). there's also a charger for her tablet just in case.
- passport and id because you will not find her without at least two forms of identification should she need it. she's not about to be hassled for that.
- a folding cane for bad pain days or when she's just tired. she uses this or a crutch but the cane is definitely the more common of the two because its convenient and she feels like it looks? less like she needs help with it. she also uses it, or tries, because she doesnt like admitting that sometimes she needs a wheelchair and because she's really stubborn and maybe self conscious? about not wearing/using her prosthetic.
- her bag is pretty plain as well and is more for utility versus fashion
- oh and unlike the other two here, akira carries her wallet on her person if she's gonna being one with her. otherwise she's using her phone to pay for everything
final one!:
the kit warren bag!
- less cluttered than dove's but he still carries a lot of stuff.
- he's had the same backpack and wallet since he was like thirteen. he will not replace them. the cat patch is covering a small hole that was a bit too big to sew. the autism pin was a gift from cole, its the only other pin he displays on his backpack because he doesn't really like them all that much.
- pokemon and loz pin because kit is a gamer. same with the switch and ds. he has pokemon games in both because he does NOT fuck around about pokemon. he also has loose pokemon cards that he threw in and never took out.
- various art supplies for when he has the time and space to actually sketch + color. two sketch books, one for work ideas and one for fun (it has stickers and things from friends & lian, he loves them dearly). colored pencils because he likes them (they arent his really nice ones, those he keeps at home) and i think those are pastels? if not that's what i intended them to be because he likes using pastels. random pencil and pen for sketching and lineart.
- not related to what's in his bag but his decorated fun sketchbook has a couple pages with drawings from friends / family (and sketches for them). there's one on the inside cover from when lian was younger (it was originally in a different sketchbook but he likes to keep it with him), a couple sketches of cartoon characters for his little cousins, some assorted little things from multiple bored titans, and like random lists of things he wants to remember but doesn't think to put in his phone.
- its not a constant in his bag but he does occasionally carry his art tablet but he doesnt do digital art a lot unless he's actively working on a game or a work thing. it doesnt feel the same.
- chargers for his devices! he learned after the Meltdown he had after an already Rough day and his switch died that he needs chargers at all times. he bought special ones for his backpack so he doesnt have to take them out.
- noise canceling headphones because the world is overwhelming as fuck sometimes and he needs them.
- midol, pads, and tampons because it never hurts to be prepared and its habit to keep them even if he doesnt need them anymore. plus he has friends that do still need them so if there's ever an emergency they at least know if they're with him someone's got supplies
- kind of the same thing with the hair ties. he doesnt need them but it never hurts to have if one of his friends does. also if whoever he's dating at the time needs them he carries a pack. there used to be a couple scrunchies in his backpack but they belonged to one of his ex girlfriends and he felt weird about anyone else borrowing them. he also maybe couldn't remember which of his ex girlfriends they belonged to so he could return them (because kit pulls unfortunately and has had a lot of short term relationships and idk he's had more girlfriends than he has boyfriends and most of his boyfriends have had short hair)
