From the comfort of her flannel blanket, Lily laid on her back staring at the sky. Nearly October, the chill of the air necessitated a generously sized cardigan in order to be comfortable. Still, Lily felt lucky they had been given such a sunny day. In some ways, it felt like a reward for everything that had been going on as of late. Hogwarts was amazing, it was, but it was proving to have a darker side to it than she had anticipated.
Which was why the realization that both she and Miriam had the same Friday afternoon free came as such a welcome relief. Lily was craving laughter and simplicity, the uncomplicated comfort of being with someone who you liked and trusted. They had made plans to picnic by the Great Lake. One again the kitchen elves maintained their streak of being generous and lovely, providing Lily with a small lunch for her and Miriam. The weather had come through as well, so now Lily waited, lounging on the grass near the water.
In her periphery she spotted Miriam approaching. Lily jumped to her feet and ran to meet her. Her recent worries fell away as she got closer, resulting in that sweet feeling of safe as she got close enough to envelop her friend in a tight hug. “It’s been ages.”
In some ways, it had. The last time they had been properly together was nearly a month ago. Of course, they saw each other in the halls and sometimes made time for a brief chat, but nothing where it was just the two of them enjoying each other’s company. She led Miriam back to their spot to sit, “We’ve got loads to catch up on.”
