It has been ten days since your luck has run out. Against your better judgement, you have not been able to just lay low and not take any risks in this state, since risk taking is what you must do to get your luck back.
And you want your luck back. You need your goddamn luck back, and the rest of your powers. There is a cautious thought in your mind about how you could probably do without the influence of the horrorterrors for the rest of your life, but you’re not sure about that, and you don’t want to fall in love with the idea before they take control over your life again anyway. It’s fine. It’s a price you will gladly pay for the Light to return to you.
So you have been working without it, returned to the projects you had filed away at home before you left. There are billionaires to take down, and you have old notes to consult.
They’re not enough to make a case, and with neither luck nor your tendency for convenient knowledge on your side, you asked Sollux for help to get more. He’s good at it, it’s what he does, so you trusted him to do well covering up his tracks.
And to be fair, he probably did, or they would be coming after him and not you. In the short amount of time that you’ve spent picking fights with the most powerful people on the planet, you, too, have done pretty well dodging them and their spies, but that was back when you were still magically smart and lucky. Nowadays, you don’t have that sort of luxury.
Which might be why, the one time that you are outside without Karkat to hover around you protectively, the street you walk down seems to be deserted. There are no witnesses when you hear quick footsteps behind you, and are struck down with a hit to the head before you can even fully turn around. Karkat is going to be so worried, you think, before you pass out.
