i literally just followed someone and tumblr unfollowed them for me
hi i want to be an acrobatic flippity flip fighter like inej ghafa and ty lee now
But was it like a role playing blog? I’ve seen other blogs dedicated to “the bad guys” or acting as them and no one was upset about that? I love those blogs. This is so confusing. Isn’t “purity always conquers” the Malfoy family motto? They are the antagonists of the story right? I mean their existence in the story, the whole purpose, was to offend? And be the bad guys? The good guys are boring- we already know them. Or was there other racist stuff on the blog besides “pure blood mania” ?
hi there ! i absolutely understand your confusion, as i was quite confused myself when i heard about it. here’s a little explanation:
to my knowledge, it was not a role playing blog. it was set up to spotlight pureblooded wizarding families, especially the sacred 28 (many of which are supporters and followers of voldemort). the general concern was that some of these characters are practically the manifestation of white supremacists and/or nazis in the wizarding world, in addition to manipulators of the twisted social hierarchies embedded in that world. the more pureblooded a person was, the more respect and class they gained. there was no systemic oppression against purebloods, and they considered themselves ultimately superior to all other people. i’m sure that if you have read HP, you know that.
it is absolutely okay to enjoy reading about antagonists or morally complex characters. it is, however, not okay to set up a blog that both acknowledges and celebrates the symbolism of racism, prejudice, and supremacy in fiction.
“purity will always conquers” is the malfoy family motto, but that does not exactly allow someone to use it or adapt it for their blog. a more extreme comparison of this is using the nazi swastika to decorate something and saying that the user of that symbol is not purposely aware they are doing this. using that quote is the same issue, just to a lesser degree. the purpose of these characters was, as you mentioned, to create a stark contrast and to offend, so they should not be glamorized.
basically, the blog creators may not have had malicious intent, but the implications of the blog symbolized something that should not be tolerated. i know that one of the creators has posted an apology that i think is genuine and well-written.
i hope this answers your question. further reading on racism and prejudice in the wizarding world can be found here.
