“Eager to avoid Father Christmas imagery, Weta’s designers pursued different interpretations of the character, drawing upon diverse cultural references. paul Tobin was inspired by Scandinavian depictions of Saint Nicholas. Andrew Adamson mentioned the idea of Father Christmas having perhaps been an old warrior, so Paul’s concept included quilted armour with snowflake and reindeer motifs, while Greg Broadmore’s concept owed to his research into Middle-Eastern stories of the Saint. Warren Mahy’s idea, was inspired by thoughts of an old, retired military general, a kind old warhorse gentle but spirited and powerful.”
“Though early concepts for the sword borne by Father Christmas referenced ancient Celtic blades, direction from Andrew Adamson saw the design evolve into a more classive and functional medieval broadsword. Paul Tobin sourced reindeer motifs for the few decorative elements”
