"I reckon there's nobody this side of the mountain who c'n braid a flower crown quite like Callie. When I turned sixteen, she had this whole dress of flowers she braided just for me, 'n I wore that thing for hours and hours on end, 'til the petals all but wilted off. I felt like I was a part of the hillside, like real royalty or somethin', you know, and that feeling... suppose I always felt like that with her...."

"Well.... to be honest, I guess I always knew somethin' would happen to her, someday. She didn't have any kinda survival instinct, not like Pity. The world's too harsh for somebody so soft."
