ALLISON GOLDSTEIN

BEGINNINGS IN CASTELIA CITY…

Allison Goldstein’s parents are the owners of Castelia’s famous Casteliacone, a special soft-serve ice cream which allowed all status problems of a Pokemon to be healed. Her mother had come up with the idea for the cone after her Vanillite had been suffering from a serious burn and tried for years to perfect the formula, eventually working out the special slow-churned recipe after numerous trials and trips to the Pokemon Center. Her father had been the stand’s first hire, a recent college grad who had returned to the city to live with his parents after being unsuccessful in finding a job upon graduation. Together they worked their way up from a small push-cart that was only open in the summers to a large stand on Mode Street that only closed in winters to give it’s staff a break. By the time Allison was born, people would wait in line all day just to get their hand on a Casteliacone with her parents having to limit their customers to one cone per week. They were newly rich, spending money freely as they weren’t sure how to handle it. Allison received a Ponyta and riding lessons for her third birthday. And for her fifth, a trip to Nimbasa City to visit their famous amusement parks. It seemed like anything she wanted was just one click away, with her parents spending money on voice lessons the week she decided she wanted to be singer and tap dancing lessons when she’d gone through that weird phase when she was fifteen. 

But at sixteen, Allison figured out her true purpose in life: Pokemon Contests. She order a specialty blender from Kalos in order to make the highest possible quality Pokeblocks and spent hundreds of dollar on scarves of varying colors. But she knew more than anything she needed the perfect Pokemon to present to the judges, with the cutest possible moves in order to achieve the coveted Master Rank Contest Ribbon. After months of searching and meeting countless Pokemon Breeders, Allison set her eyes on the most perfect Buneary ever to exist. She was thrilled with it, immediately telling the breeder that she wanted her no matter what the price. She began training right away, shopping for TMs that would enable her Rabbit Pokemon to have the cutest possible display of moves while appealing to the judges. It wasn’t long before together they’d earned their first Normal Rank Ribbon. That was when all hell broke loose, her mother had found out that Allison had paid over 122,000 for a Pokemon (about $8,000 US dollars) and was livid. Allison didn’t see anything wrong with her purchase, stating several instances in the past where her parents had spent their own money much more frivolously - including one instance when her mother had gotten tipsy at a wine auction and bid more for a painting. 

It was then that the Goldsteins realized that their flippant attitude about money had made a monster out of their daughter, who had never worked for her own money a day in her life. At first, they attempted to make Allison work at the Casteliacone stand in order to make her own spending money but the exercise quickly proved futile. Their daughter was rude right back to customers and was getting the shop several bad reviews on Yelp, it wouldn’t be long before she drove down their coveted five star average. So they began to leverage her money for her school grades, financing her Pokemon Contests so long as she did well in school. Allison quickly grew tired of having to study on Friday nights and listening to her parents drone on about college constantly, instead she opted to skip the whole deal and become a Pokemon Coordinator for money instead of going to business school and taking over the family’s creamery. Her parents were livid at her for potentially throwing away her future, but Allison held firm to the idea even when they threatened to cut her off. She did some research of her own within the Pokemon Contest Hall and found out that Professor Oak was funding a Pokedex Challenge in Kanto. Allison decided this was her best possible move, if she caught her own Pokemon in Kanto and battled other trainers, not only would she make enough money for contests but she’d be able to dominate all five ranks of the Contest Hall eventually. Her parents were still skeptical about the idea - worried their materialistic, ditzy daughter would do more harm to herself than other Pokemon trainers - but relented and bought her a plane ticket to Kanto. They just put one condition on it, if she wasn’t successful in defeating the Indigo League’s eight gyms by the end of the year she would come home and go to college. With the false confidence of someone who had never battled a day in her life, Allison agreed and headed off for Pallet Town.
