"Skinty Fia” is an expression that our drummer’s great auntie used to say. She was an [...] exclusively Irish-speaking person. [...] It roughly translates as “the damnation of the deer.” I don’t know, it sounds like mutation and doom and inevitability and all these things that I felt were congruous to my idea of Irishness abroad. Like if you go to Boston, that expression of Irishness. That’s skinty fia to me. That’s that mutation. That’s a new thing. It’s not unlicensed and it’s not impure. It’s important to do that for a bunch of different things, to just learn how to be happy and present in the moment. But it’s hard when your brain is constantly thinking, ‘What about the future?’ and ‘What about the past?’. It’s the human struggle – basically ‘What does it mean to be content?’ — Joe Keery +

Something the record looks at is peeling back the 'masquerade’ or the facade we all put up. The curtain is pulled and cynicism takes its place - it’s really easy to be cynical and far harder to be hopeful and genuine. Stripping it back is painful, you can find things you’re really not proud of but it also lends itself to a sort of acceptance that can’t be attained if you don’t allow yourself that vulnerability. A lot of the themes and ideas in the album come from that place. — Euan Manning +

There are certain songs that I think are easier to understand than others, but one thing that I really love about writing music is the freedom to dip in and out of fiction and nonfiction, how you can jump from song to song to a different topic and then you find this narrative thread between them. — Michelle Zauner +
