- You’re okay, Jack. I think - under different circumstances - you and I... probably still woulda hated each other.
Not-lead characters that I adore beyond reason: An Advent Calendar
Day 20: Henry Allardyce (Richard Griffiths) in A Private Function [1984]
Henry, bless him, is a complete sweetheart, in a town where being a sweetheart gets you nowhere, especially if your wife is a social climber and you just want a quiet life, and someone deserving of all your affection. Henry is basically Gilbert, until Gilbert comes along and then there's two of them, and they get to bond over the simple things; mainly not wanting to kill Betty (the pig).Â
Alan Bennett is a genius, of course, and this film is just ridiculously stuffed full of great acting talent (it was pretty fabulous back then, it's even more unbelievable looking back on it) but Henry is the heart of the film, which is why I love him so much. I know Richard Griffiths is always going to be an uncle or a lovely big gayer (or both) for most people (me too) but I think Henry is one of his finest performances because there's nothing showy or obvious about it, and yet it still stands out, in a film full of eccentrics and grotesques and comic characters.Â
