HDM alphabet series â C is for Cave
The Cave was a machine in Oxford, Will's world which the Dark Matter Research Unit used to communicate with what they called Shadow-particles. Mary Malone (the director of the Unit) showed it to Lyra Silvertongue when she came to visit. Lyra immediately recognised it as similar to her alethiometer and easily communicated with the computer.
HDM alphabet series â B is for Balthamos
Balthamos was an angel who served Xaphania in the rebellion against the Authority. Unlike his lover Baruch, Balthamos was never a human and was an angel all of his life. Together with Baruch, Balthamos sought out Will Parry, hoping to bring him and the subtle knife to Lord Asriel to aid in the fight against the Authority.
