Frankâs divorce is finalized in October, and the only company he has except for his kids every other weekend is his dog.Â
His needy and badly behaved dog, Pluto. Terror and first of her name.Â
He honestly would be fucked if Mel hadnât offered to help him. Apparently, sheâs something like a dog-whisperer. Which he shouldâve predicted.Â
That doesnât mean they always manage to agree when it comes to Plutoâs training.Â
Frank starts, âBut all the books sayââ
âIgnore the books,â Mel cuts him off. âTheyâre clearly not working for you.â She bends down to pet an ever-excited Pluto. âOr her.â She looks up at him as she scratches Pluto behind the ears. âHonestly, Iâve seen far worse. Plus, it helps that we know attention and food are both good incentives. She just needs some redirection.â
He snorts. âYeah. Guess she takes after her father.â
Mel laughs as she stands back up. âYou wish you were as cute as her.â
âWell, thatâs a given,â he replies.
She shakes her head and takes out a treat to give it to Pluto.
Theyâve been hanging out almost every day since his divorce. He canât remember the last time they went more than two days in a row without seeing each other. In their time together, sheâs learned his sense of humor, and heâs done his best to be someone she can rely on.Â
It isnât perfect, though.Â
Their relationship confuses him. Not because he doesnât trust her or think sheâs genuine about helping him. Itâs just that sometimes he swears theyâre flirting, but then he realizes how much of an idiot heâd have to be to believe that. Mel would never. He isnât the kind of puzzle she wants or should have to figure out. Heâs the kind that would ruin her life.Â
But there are times when she looks at him, all fond, andâŚHe melts.Â
