âLook, I need to give Heather something. Something that shows Iâm serious,â Robby says as he, Jack, and Frank make their way to a downtown shop called Kingâs Garden.
âAnd you think flowers will do that?â Jack asks.
âNot just any flowers,â Robby grins. âKingâs flowers.â
If youâre a mutant, you know Kingâs Garden. Itâs run by twin sisters, both mutants. Oneâs an empath who can read people just by being in the same room as them. The other can control and talk to plants.Â
âDid you hear that, Langdon?â Jack teases. âRobbyâs pulling out the big stop.â
Frank chuckles as they step inside and stops short. The shop is alive with color. Vines climb the walls. Flowers bloom from every direction. It should feel chaotic, but instead, It feels warm, familiar, inviting.
âTwo healers. One telekinetic. All male. One with a message of false love and promise.â The voice comes before anyone can respond.
âBecca,â another voice calls, softer. âWhat did we say about blurting peopleâs business?â
âTo not do it,â the first replies, unfazed, with a teasing smirk.
The sisters appear from behind the counter. Twin blondes, similar in looks, but each with her own spark. One grounded and soft, the other chaotic in a charming way.
âWhat did she mean by false love?â Robby frowns.
âShe means youâre thinking about proposing, but your heart hasnât caught up yet,â the older one says. âDonât worry. Becca can keep a secret.â
âIâm Mel.â She gently places a bouquet into Robbyâs arms: roses, lilies, and hydrangeas in soft yellows, pinks, and whites. âShe needs appreciation first. The future will come later.â
Mel offers a warm smile, then suddenly her eyes narrow. She shoots out a hand, and a vine rises from a pot and coils lightly around Jackâs wrist as he reaches for a tall plant.
âI wouldnât touch that,â she warns lightly. âUnless you like counting to nine.â
She turns to Frank and smiles brightly. âYouâre here.â
Before he can respond, she ducks behind the counter and returns with a small tube, placing it in his hand.
âFor your back pain.â
Frank blinks. âHow did youâ?â
She taps her temple, giggling. âPrecognitive empath.â
Then sheâs gone again, helping Robby check out. Before he knows it, Frank is back outside, trailing behind the others. But something lingers.
âIâll be right back,â he mutters, turning back toward the shop.
Inside, Mel is trying to lift a heavy vase. He quietly opens the door, lifts a hand, and the vase rises off the floor. Mel turns and laughs softly when she sees him.Â
âI canât grow anything,â he says with a shrug, âbut I can move a thing or two.â
âYouâre a lifesaver,â she replies, smiling.
âI just wanted to say goodbye. And⌠I hope to see you around, Mel.â
âIâd like that,â she says, voice warm.
Frank lingers, then turns to leave. Mel watches him go, a soft smile on her lips as the vines sway above her.
