People said It wouldnât be easy being in a relationship when you worked with so many attractive people. Sure the Avengers were hot, and yeah you enjoyed looking at them, but your relationship was your world. Having someone to love you unconditionally, comfort you when you were down, and praise you when you were up. That was what you had at first.
You had met your boyfriend at a coffee shop a year ago, and in your ânewly hired trying to make the coffee run in record time to impress your boss i.e. Tony Starkâ, rush managed to spill hot coffee and tea all over his freshly pressed white shirt. You apologized profusely for about two minutes before he flashed you a smile and gave you a way to make up for it. In total shock you scrambled and wrote your number down for him, and the rest was history. Things were perfect starting out, he was attentive and caring, always going the extra mile. You were in paradise. A few months in Tony wanted to promote you, but it required you to move into the tower, which was fine but things seemed to change. It was almost like being Alice and going through the looking glass, everything looked the same but it felt off. You ignored it though, blaming your head for making problems up, and continued on.
Fast-forward to now. You were basically the manager for the Avengers, you set the schedule when it wasnât crime fighting or world-saving, and became fast friends with all of them, well except for one. Loki had made the team in a bid to prove his dark days were behind him, and while most people didnât agree, you thought it was a good choice. Sure Loki had tried to take over the world once, but who didnât have their dark times and regrettable decisions. He was a distant person, quiet and calculating, mischievous in every way. When he wasnât hiding from everyone else though, you found him in the living room late at night reading a book or looking up at the stars.
You started by just sitting in the dark on the opposite side of the room not talking. He would quirk an eyebrow for a split second your way and turn back to his book. After two weeks of sitting in silence, you made the first move.
âThe stars are brighter when everyone is quiet, I always wonder who might be looking at us while weâre looking out at them.â
Loki looked at you from his perch on the couch, you leaning against the wall.
âThousands of beings beyond the scope of your pathetic Midgardian mind.â
You smiled at him warmly.
âI suppose youâre right.â
After that Loki would greet you as you sat down with your own book, a small nod of his head, but the simple gesture meant so much more.
You began to ask him questions about the universe, and what literature he was reading on the given night. He was short at first in his answers, but when he discovered you had known more about the classics than you let on he began to let you in.
Loki talked about Asgard, his true parentage, his would be father and his mother. You could tell he had loved his mother more than he put into words, the hurt was plain on his face when he talked about her passing.
âI wish I couldâve known her.â
You had placed your hand on top of his. The shock on his face only lasted a second before the indifferent mask was back, but you had seen what the small gesture meant to him.
Today was no different in your routine, but something told you otherwise. It had been one of those days where you woke up and felt something was off. Just the way the light filtered through the clouds, how the shadows cast on buildings didnât sit quite right. You found your reason as you stopped by your boyfriend's apartment to pick up some of your clothes you had left from the weekend. It was almost like you had walked into a dream, detached and distant, watching the scene from another place. Seeing him plowed deep into some leggy blonde, there was no reaction on your part. Just numbness as you walked out the door quietly, never looking back.
You had been sitting in your room staring at the wall since you got back to the tower. The shock of it all still acting like a shield. When you finally turned your head from the blank wall to the window hours later, the bright blue had turned into a pitch black, and night had taken over the day.
You stretched your limbs slightly as you got to your feet, walking silently out of the room. There was no real destination, just a need to move, and then a need to run. Your body began to heat, your chest pounding, your breathing ragged. Stumbling through the hall you managed to make your way onto the terrace, ripping the door open and gasping in huge lungfuls of the fresh air. Your hands were clenched against the railing, knuckles white. Sobs took over your body, the numbness finally wearing off. You clutched your chest as you fell to your knees in a heap of emotion. The breeze blew gently across the city, as it kissed your tears, cooling your cheeks.
You heard someone clear their throat behind you and you flinched. Turning your head, you saw none other than the mischievous friend you had become so fond of.
You were waiting on some snarky quip from the god on the state of your appearance, but it never came. He looked at you with his vibrant eyes, their expression almost soft. Loki began to walk towards you, his shoes stopping by your knees, his hand outstretched. With tearful eyes, you placed your shaking hand in his, and he pulled you to your feet. The surprise of what he did next was what made all the more tears pour from your puffy eyes. Gently taking your arms into his hands, Loki pulled you to his chest and embraced you. Your head rested against his chest, his rhythmic heartbeat like a steady drum slowing your breathing back to normal.
âWhen I was a child in Asgard I used to have terrible nightmares, the frost giants coming to raid the palace, battering and killing anything in their path.â
His voice was low, and you could feel the rumble in his chest against your cheek.
âI would run to my mother's chambers in the early hours of the morning, she would embrace me in her arms, and it seemed all that I had feared was gone in an instant.â
You sniffled softly, pulling away from his chest to look at him.
He was looking up at the stars, a glimmer of moisture in his eyes. He looked down at you. You noticed how the lines in his forehead were smooth when he wasnât scowling, his eyes were kinder, his face younger.
âWhomever did this to you does not deserve your tears.â
You looked away briefly.
âThey donât deserve my words either, whatâs done is done, the past canât be changed.â
You felt a cool hand touch your chin gently, bringing your eyes back to his face. Loki hesitated before speaking.
âPerhaps the old must die for a brighter path to begin.â
You smiled softly.
âYou know, Iâve always been more of a night person myself, thereâs just something about sharing the stars with someone who can appreciate their stories.â
Loki smirked as he turned back to the sky pulling you to his sturdy chest once more, cool hand resting on the small of your back.
âSo stories you shall have my pet.â
