Whilst open to interpretation, I view Midoriko & the man whom loved her/Magatsuhi as reincarnations of Kikyo/Kagome & Onigumo/Naraku, it would explain why the Jewel wants them as replacements so badly. I was reading how all the different elements of souls/spirits in Japanese mythology, so its possible for two or more people to have part of the same soul!

But I gotta admit that I was intrigued when the jewel had accepted Naraku and Kagome to take Magatsuhi and Midoriko’s place. The original two had seemed extremely powerful when they were introduced, likely beyond the casts’ imagination. Not to say Naraku and Kagome weren’t powerful in their own right, but I didn’t think they were on the same playing field, so to speak. Oh, how I’d love to see someone write an AU where Inuyasha failed to save her and the jewel was reborn.
I like to imagine in contrast to Onigumo, the man that loved Midoriko was a nobleman with a good reputation, secretly he had a love of debauchery. He fell for Midoriko upon first seeing her work but kept this to himself with a secret room in his castle dedicated to this obsession & planned/once did disasters at his area so Midoriko would show up. He either didn't plan to merge with the Yokai or regretted it. His face was similar to Magatsuhi.

Basically assigned to stay at her side so that she may work under the shogun by extension. This man absolutely abhorred youkai and admired Midoriko heavily. Considering that, in Midoriko’s time, youkai ran more rampant than ever, I could presume that the lord wanted to keep her closer and closer to his castle to protect himself and demand her to slay the creatures that plague his land while she tried to keep the peace between human and youkai, knowing that the battles would only get worse if daiyoukai were to be involved. It gets to the point where the lord may want to imprison Midoriko or, after learning of her ‘pure’ intentions, may send her out to what he deems certain death. (Point is: she’s stressed lol)
I wonder if, in a moment of weakness- or maybe a glimpse of clarity- she would cut down this man by her own hand if he threatened to shatter any hope and doom everyone to more endless war by displaying his animosity. Because I think it would take more than an obsession for Magatsuhi to become this great evil that she had to subdue by sealing them both. Betrayal and endearing-love-turn-to-hatred might do the trick.

( I'll start by saying that I consider the movies to be canon for my portrayals (and for now, I don't have plans to watch Yashahime, if that makes any difference here).
In the beginning of the series, he was nearly obsessed with them- with Tetsusaiga, in particular. It's the sword that Sess wanted his father to leave behind when he left to save Izayoi and Inuyasha; pure power that represented how great his father was. For the longest time, he thought Inuyasha to be unworthy to wield it and he was constantly cucked by the idea of what it meant for Sess to wield Tenseiga (at first, it was passed down so he couldn't kill Inuyasha, then its purpose was to teach him compassion, and then it practically made Sess a tool to claim and enhance the Meido so that it could ultimately be given to Tetsusaiga and Inuyasha. Fack u, inu-dad)
Up until Bakusaiga made an appearance, Sess loses his cool when it comes to the swords. I would say it's nearly uncharacteristic of him if I hadn't looked into his character further than the surface level. He's usually level-headed, refusing to oblige to any favors whether it's from his father's own friends or his (self-proclaimed) allies, and yet he got pulled into Naraku's schemes without much effort on Naraku's part to kill Inuyasha out of spite for the sword at least twice, maybe three times if I can recall correctly. Which makes his part of the quest to kill Naraku kind of funny, imo, when comparing his reason to the rest of the cast.
But when Bakusaiga does comes about, I could say that his interest in Tetsusaiga completely ceases to exist. He forged his own power, exceeding that of his father's and his swords and now he paves his own path forward without much regard to the past. The swords helped his character growth throughout the series immensely and he respects the power of both the Tetsusaiga and Tenseiga and the memory of his father. But I bet it still stings when he thinks about all the hoops his dad set up for him to jump through. )
