I had a big long-winded thing I went into on Discord, but lately I've been thinking about how it is SO SWEET that Soma finds the strength to defeat "chaos" after all of the people who have been linked to Dracula before (especially Julius and Alucard) give him their support.
It's like they've finally actually forgiven Dracula's soul, and now it can be purified in this new body and Mathias can be free of the prison he made for himself.
Because during SOTN, I do believe he is having some major cognitive dissonance about what he is doing ... and probably realises then that he's gone too far and that something bigger than him is taking over. And then, after he apologises to alucard in SOTN, when he dies he is FULLY taken over by something that has no trace of humanity left.
So he's essentially trapped in the zombified husk of his former self while chaos and anger and hatred controls him. Then julius sets his soul free in 1999, separating the "human" soul from the one that has been corrupted.... as represented by his castle and everything inside of it.
I dunno, it just makes me emotional to know that Soma recieving love and support during a difficult time in his life is what allows him AND Dracula to be free again. And It's amazing too how it had to happen in 2035...
Koji Igarashi didn't know how much more prevalent mental health topics would be in the future, but he was right on the money. A guy dealing with the loss of his wife nearly 1000 years prior would of course be driven mad by grief when no one listened to him. And now, Soma TRIED to keep his doubt and confusion internal, but when he needed it most he let it be known and people told him that they believed in him.
It's just nice.
I think that the overarching theme of Castlevania for me is "love".
