The Last Big Pontiac
The difference between the ‘76 and ‘77 GM cars could not be any more stark, and from a design perspective, the thing that “made a Pontiac a Pontiac” began to go away.
Every incarnation since ‘77 either looked like someone had taken a crude meat cleaver to the old car and just made square cuts, then later smooshed ‘em a little bit. That gave way to nothing but sqauashed blobs of plastic with wheels that looked NOTHING like “A Pontiac”.
Here’s my one claim to Pontiac ownership, a pristine maroon 1976 Bonneville Two-door with Opera Roof that had been garaged its intire life, interior was abolutely like new. This thing was an absolute unit of a Land Yacht: 21 1/2 feet long. As a TWO DOOR!...I measured.
After she was mine, I kept her covered and waxed and fussed over, until some drunk redneck hit me at 2am while I was going home from my night job, Bent the frame, totalling it. Of course, since it was 17 years old, insurance just said “sorry pal”.
But while she lasted, this was the most amazingly smooth-riding, fast (400 4bbl), and luxurious car I ever owned. Gas mileage? Who gave a fuck! So here’s to The Last Big Pontiac.
