I just wanna learn what the language teaching practices are for shadowhunters since they need to learn latin & greek and such AND all of them seem to be really good at languages. either shadowhunters are just naturally linguistically talented or then they have amazing language education system that the real world would benefit highly from. And why do people in idris speak english

The worst part of language learning nobody prepares you for is stuff that's super similar for your mother tongue but just a little bit off so you'll never get it right.
So I'm German and of course we have äöüß, right? And this was nice for Swedish for example, they also have äō, just needed to learn å, that was fine. However.
I also tried to learn Finnish. And they also have äöå. Oh how convenient! With how different it is from the first two it's nice it comes with one advantage - or so I thought. Back then I was using Duolingo and I kept wondering: why does the ä sound so much like an a so often? I ask a Finnish speaker. No conclusive answer. I actually practice Finnish around Finnish speakers. "You're saying it wrong, you're saying it like e, it's ä." I try to make the fucking sound. Whatever I do is wrong. Finally we look it up.
The Finnish ä is not the same ä as the German ä. For all that is holy: what the fuck. It's a sound that to me is in between my ä and a, and I have a super hard time actually making it. I cannot consistently do it well enough to get Finnish approval. So whenever I try to say a Finnish word with an ä I have to make a decision. Do I just say a? Do I use my ä? Do I try?
It's one if the reasons I have benched Finnish for now. I'm glad I understand a little but holy fuck how will I ever get ä right. And it's not a small thing, either. It's such a common letter.
