While Jax had certainly panicked about Adeline’s health when he saw her in the middle of Charles’ attack, he had never truly worried that she was gone for good. He knew her too well. Adeline was a fighter, and even a Jewel of Destiny would have a hard time taking her out.

As sensitive as he wanted to be about the entire situation, Jax had a job to do. He’d learned from what happened to Athena, and considering Adeline’s experience had been even more intense, he didn’t want to waste it. Maeve hadn’t gone back into town since she’d struck her deal with the crew. She knew that she would have to go back to her shop eventually to gather her things and say her goodbyes, but she wasn’t ready to face the reality of leaving Westburgh. Not yet, at least. When she wasn’t begrudgingly learning the ins and outs of the ship, Maeve had taken to sitting on the top deck and watching the water. Soon, she would be out there exploring it all. A grand adventure for a grand woman.

The sound of footsteps broke her concentration. Her hands curled into fists and she whipped her head around to find Adeline a few feet away. “You,” she called, trying hard not to sound relieved that it was only her, “We need to talk.” // @adelinedrxke

“You look like you could use a drink.” Maeve wasn’t the type of person to usually approach strangers, but the Moon Festival was a special occasion. Just like so many others who lived in the city, she’d experienced a very profitable year. It was the time to celebrate these visitors that had made the year so good for her. “Here, take this. Ever since the Athena incident at the tavern, Jax had been worried. What seemed like ages ago, Adeline had offered to test the Jewel for them. Now that they were so close to potentially learning how to actually use it, Jax knew he had to make a decision. He could either let Adeline test the jewel as offered...or he could let everyone vote.

It seemed, he thought, that someone who fully understood the risks involved should be the first person to use it. If it went well, everyone could. His conscience couldn’t handle anyone else getting hurt or dazed because of the damn thing.

“Hey,” Jax stuck his head into the crew’s quarters, then waved a bottle of rum in Adeline’s direction. “Care to have a drink with me?” // @adelinedrxke

“Heads up,” Jax tossed a bottle of the alcohol Adeline helped steal on the island toward her. Since the night they had discovered the intruder, Jax had barely slept. Between questioning the man and making sure his crew, not to mention Lyra, were okay, there was little time to get shut eye. But he’d never been so exhausted in his entire life. All of the magic he’d done and the adrenaline from catching the intruder had left him totally wiped. “Let’s call this breakfast. Just don’t tell Jasper we didn’t eat a real meal, okay?” The sun was rising slowly, bathing the deck in warm orange light. // @adelinedrxke
