Things play out relatively the same for Elias in his 03 verse from his early childhood until he leaves home to join the military at the age of 17. However, once he actually joins the military, is where things do change for this verse. Elias is actively attempting to continue his grandfather’s work, but this time around is fully experimenting on live human subjects rather than keeping his studies mostly animal based. He gathers his unfortunate victims from the streets of Central, all while making a name for himself as the Stained Glass Alchemist.
Elias ends up working in Lab 5 and on the Philosopher’s Stone research much earlier in this verse, with his experimentations into human alchemy being discovered and put to use by the Homunculi. Elias once again works rather closely with Dr. Marcoh in this verse, helping in the development of the Red Water and the Red Stones. As well as learning the truth to the creation of Philosopher’s Stones. Though he is never given the chance to create his own. Similarly to his main verse, is drafted to the Ishbal War of Extermination. He is placed on the front lines before being pulled back as medical assistance.
Elias feigns compliance with this, working quietly to gather the materials he needs to create his own Philosopher’s Stone so that he can truly complete his grandfather’s research. He slowly but surely gathers the materials he needs and towards the end of the war, crafts a stone from the souls of an entire yet unmarred district of Ishbal, as well as the poor unfortunate soldiers who happened to be preparing to raid it at the time. Crafting the stone nearly kills him, though Elias survives by literally binding a good chunk of his own soul into the Philosopher’s Stone.
He of course, also attracted a lot of attention doing this, and as he is recovering from the subsequent burns and wounds he received in the chaos, he is arrested and the stone he created quietly removed and confiscated (note: the stone is not a complete philosopher’s stone, just a more advanced version of the red stones like some of the other stones created in the 03 anime). Elias is tried for his war crimes and placed on death row. He spends roughly 3 years in prison 2, though rather than being executed by the state he is returned to Lab 5.
