Presenter: Dr Jeromy Anglim is a lecturer in research methods in the School of Psychology at Deakin University and has been using R as his primary statistical tool for over ten years. He is the former organiser of the Melbourne R User group and has contributed extensively to the online R community. He has authored many journal articles using R and is the author of the "personalityfacets" R package. For more information see http://jeromyanglim.blogspot.com.au/search/label/R
What is R and RStudio? R is a free and open source platform for data analysis. RStudio provides a user-friendly interface for interacting with R. Both R and RStudio run on Mac OSX, Windows, and Linux operating systems. R provides similar functionality to other full-featured statistical packages such as SPSS, Stata, and SAS. In many respects, R provides a superior environment for performing flexible, thorough, and reproducible data analyses. However, R does have a reputation for being challenging for beginners. Thus, this workshop seeks to highlight why learning R is worthwhile, and provide users with a solid basis for getting started with R.
Who is this course for? This course is designed for complete novices and beginner users of R and RStudio. The final section on workflow and reproducible research should also be of interest to intermediate R users. Although relevant to anyone wanting to learn how to use R, it will be particularly suited to academic and industry researchers in the social and behavioural sciences interested in applying R in their research.
The course will provide an introduction to R and RStudio with an emphasis on:
What can R do? Why and when would you want to use it?
Data types, functions, operations
R Packages (installing, loading, using)
Standard statistical functions (e.g., descriptive statistics, correlations, linear regression)
Overview of what is possible (multilevel modelling, structural equation modelling, Bayesian analysis, bootstrapping, meta-analysis, etc.)
How to organise a complete data analysis project with ProjectTemplate
How to use knitr to create reproducible data analysis documents that process raw data and produce statistical output
The course will include a mixture of lecture-style presentation and interactive exercises.
Requirements: Participants are required to bring their own laptops and install R and R Studio prior to attending the workshop (both are free).
Internet Wi-Fi You should be able to access internet using Wi-Fi on the day.
If you have a university email account (Deakin or another Australian university), you can access the eduroam wi-fi network.
If you are not affiliated with a university, you can access the Guest WiFi Deakin network. Simply follow the prompts.
Please download and install R onto your laptop prior to the course. The latest version is 3.2.0 (May 2015). To download and install the latest version:
If using Windows (XP, Vista or 7) download the binary from http://cran.ms.unimelb.edu.au/bin/windows/base/release.htm If you use a different operating system such as Mac OSX go to http://cran.ms.unimelb.edu.au and follow the links.
Open the file and install
Linux users can usually use their standard package manager.
Go to: http://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/
Click on the installer for your operating system to download
Open the installer to install RStudio
On Windows, to check R Studio is working double click the desktop icon, or Click: Start => All programs => R Studio => R Studio.

Parking and getting there A map of the Burwood campus of Deakin University is available here: http://www.deakin.edu.au/campuses/burwood-map.php
Parking is $6.00 per day A simple option for parking involves driving into entrance 1 and going to the multilevel parking at the back of campus, but there are other options. At this time of year there should be plenty of parking. http://www.deakin.edu.au/life-at-deakin/our-locations/melbourne-burwood-campus/map
