“Teach me how to play?” - Erin (BASEBALL BASEBALL BASEBALL)
“You’re supposed to bend your knees.”
“Well not that much.”
“Okay that’s too little.”
“Here, let me help you.”
Erin feels Tori on her back, those calloused hands slide over her own lithe hands. Erin can see Tori smiling out of the corner of her eye, the scent of sandalwood lingers. “Now, your grip should be like this.” Erin can feel Tori’s voice rumbling upon her back. She makes note of the dexterous fingers adjust her own grip. Tori’s hands slide down Erin’s arms and up to her shoulders. With a firm grip she adjusts Erin’s shoulder.
“Now square your shoulders and look your opponent dead on.”
Erin nods her head, her eyes narrowing as she stares down at the pitching mound. Her grip tightening over the trusty wooden bat that Tori had leant her just for this occasion. Erin breaths in: she becomes aware of the faint breeze in the air, the dust that tickles at her exposed legs, and of course the eyes that are fixed back at her, Malix’s eyes. “Don’t let him intimidate you no matter what, you are in control of what happens over here.” Erin nods her head as she squeezes down on the bat.
“Now the last thing you got to learn is the follow through,” Tori’s voice is in Erin’s ear. Tori practices the swinging motion with Erin, her arms draped over her’s. The motion itself seems foreign. Still though Erin continues with it. “Not matter what, you got to keep your eye on the ball and when you see it, just swing the bat.”
Erin nods her head, Tori’s hands slide away from her. She brings her attention to Malix, to the hulking mass standing on the mound. He winds up the pitch and throws, the ball comes hurdling down towards her. Erin’s attention fixes to the white of the ball. She breathes in and the world stills around her, the ball comes closer, and the only sound she can hear is Tori’s voice, “swing the bat.”

The winds ravaged the landscape. Monsters lay slain, their limbs strewn carelessly across the landscape. A tiny figure stood in the middle of the storm. Her bright eyes brimmed with confidence as she stared straight ahead at the taller figure. Her pouty lips curled upwards carefully in a smile as she stared lovingly towards the former hunter.
“You call yourself a hero?”
Her words echo across the destroyed landscape. Buildings lay decimated, their strong structures had become dust, and what had once been their home was scorched black. Tori swallowed down, hands trembled as she stepped forward. She glance to the side, to the two bodies that lay there. The one to the left was Annabella, she laid curled up like a kitten, ginger locks draped across the charred grounds, and her chest rose and fell rhythmically. Tori was aware of the black and thick roots that wrapped around Anna. The roots snaked around her alabaster skin, under the folds of her dress, and across her lithe neck.
Tori’s attention shifted to Malix, the once fierce and strong devil stood frozen in time. Bright eyes widen by terror and surprise. A blackened arrow lay imbedded in his chest, the black arrowhead pierced through his heart, and poked through his back. His mouth was open just agape, his features contorted into that of pain and betrayal. He stared now at Erin whom stood unapologetic and unfazed by that sorrow-filled stare.
“E-Erin…”
Her voice was but a whimper. Her green eyes flashed with alarm. The young witch smiled her brown hair fluttered against the breeze.
“You have no monsters to fight, no more people to save, and we have come to our ending.”
Erin drew out her words. Her honey filled gazed had turned sour some time ago. Tori eyed the blackened roses that grew from her palms and the black thorns that snaked their ways up her forearms and around her fingers. Erin didn’t seem to mind or perhaps even notice. She walked forward, her white dress swished from side to side as she approached the hunter.
Tori swallowed down. She reached towards her side at the bat that rested by her side. Her bright eyes flashed a warning the witch didn’t acknowledge. She slunk forwards, lithe body pressed against Tori as she gazed up at her. Her smile had grown sweeter as her tiny fingers wrapped around Tori’s shoulders, the thorns biting into exposed flesh.
“Erin, do you know what you have done?”
Erin remained silent, her glossy lips lingered so tantalizingly close. Tori’s fingers loosened as she stared own at that familiar face. The scent of apples and laundry detergent washed around her and removed the scent of gore and death. The former hunter breathed in. She closed her eyes and fooled herself into thinking it would be alright.
“Tori, I want my happy end.”
Tori’s eyes shot open and she was aware of the coldness that ran through her veins. She felt the sharp bite of magic around her wrists, she cried out. She pulled against the magic only to feel the energy drained from her. The horrible sickening sound echoed through the destroyed landscape. Erin’s grip tightened as she leaned in closer, her warm body pressed against Tori’s own, and the two looked towards one another.
“I don’t want a hero… I don’t want a bad end…”
Her words seemed so melodic as they slipped past the damnable lips. She leaned upwards, her lips were a few inches away from Tori’s own. Even now she could see the determination behind Erin’s eyes. The thrones continued to grow and they moved their ways up their arms.
“All I want is…”
Her eyelids drooped as she pulled Tori closer. Magic swirled around them and moved their way up the former hunter’s exposed arm. The muscles pained as she dropped to the ground, Erin’s smaller form dropped on top of her, and easily pinned the hunter to the ground.
Tori felt the blood pour from her features, the tanned skin grew cool and white. Her green eyes darted from the spreading black magic that moved up the hunter’s arms and towards her shoulders. She grunted and tried to move but felt as if her limbs turned to stone.
“Erin, please… this is going to kill us.”
Erin shook her head, her face changed not into fear but that of longing. She reached her arms around Tori’s shoulders. Her legs straddled Tori’s waist.
“No, Tori…”
The thorns moved at the same pace as the stone. Tori hissed as the stone made it’s way up around Tori’s collarbone. She felt the heaviness and the coldness. Erin smiled the thorns gave bloom to more roses as it wrapped around her neck and torso. Her body was being constricted by the blackened vines. She leaned down.
“Now… I can get what I want. No angels, no monsters, and no distractions.”
Tori’s gaze flickered to the destroyed city, the darkened sky, and scorched ground. Erin remained unaffected as she finally caught Tori’s gaze full on. The stone had crawled it’s way over Tori’s neck and locked it in place.
“I finally get you.”
Erin’s lips captured Tori’s own. The softness ebbed away the feeling of cold feeling that crawled up her jawline. She looked towards Erin, her beloved, and her most precious. She could see as the blackened vines plunged into Erin’s chest, a singular red rose sprung up from the wound. Tori closed her eyes and felt the coldness take over. The world tingled as the light drifted away, sensory input vanished, and then there was a singular lingering thought on her mind: her Erin.
Erin stood up, body covered in vines, thorns, and roses. She looked around towards her lovers. To her left was Malix, her fierce and protective lover lost to time. He again would never escape to hell and leave her.
To her right lay Annabella, the former hunter and the former witch. She lay slumbering, her body covered in the roots of the earth. She would dream happy dreams until the end of time. No longer would she have to deal with the heartache of the waking world.
Before her lay her former hunter, the former hero, and now a statue. She would never return home covered in bruises and scratches. She would have to be frightened ever again.
Erin smiled such a sweet smile. Now no one could steal her loves away ever again.
When she dreamt she felt weightless. The endless shifting of worlds caused her to feel like a kite caught in the wind. The worlds hold many secrets, images of monsters and angels, of hunters, and of things she can’t describe. She breathed out, fingers brushed against a familiar soft surface, and then she heard it: the voice, the voice that always called her back.
“Tori.”
It echoed inside of her, eyes fluttered open and shut, the worlds collided, and then light poured into her vision. Long and slender fingers brushed against Tori’s cheek. Tori turned her head. Her eyes were cast in a dreamy expression as she reached out to take hold of Erin’s hand.
“Morning Erin…” she muttered, “I missed you.” The smaller woman smiles that bright and cheerful smile. Her long lashes flutter as she leans down and places a gentle kiss upon Tori’s brow. The rosy lips leaving a lingering trace of her love. She stands up, tiny form silhouetted against the background of morning light.
“Time to get up, you’re going to be late.”
The woman nods her head and sits up. Her long hair tumbled over her shoulders, strands of chestnut brown tickles her bare shoulders. She yawned and shifted her attention towards the open door. She can hear Malix calling out, his raspy voice carried through the halls, and into her room.
“Who drank all of the milk?!”
Tori grinned, as she pulled on pajama pants. She stepped through into the hall and down the steps. Her footsteps burdened by weariness. She followed the steps drawn by the gentle lull of Annabella’s voice. She stands with her back to Tori. Her ginger locks swept back in a braid. She hums the same tune that she does every morning. Behind her stands Malix, the large man grumbles as he carries around a cup of coffee, one that will go without milk this morning. Erin takes her place among them, she sat at the counter, her gaze settled to her books.
Tori walked forward, her arms wrapped around Annabella’s slender frame. She breathed in, that familiar scent of lavender felt like home to her.
“Good morning,” she breathed, Annabella chuckled that raspy chuckle. She turned her head ever so slightly, a glimmer of her bright eyes fixed to the smaller form. “You just wake up Bratling?” Tori doesn’t respond as she nuzzles between the taller woman’s shoulder blades. “What you making?” She asks her voice muffled by the black fabric.
“Something good.”
Tori nodded her head as she stepped back her calloused hands brushed against Annabella’s side. She turned her attention to Malix as he settled beside Erin. He grumbled curses beneath his breath, his dark eyes shifted to meet with Tori’s.
“You drank all the milk again you little shit.”
His words drop with irritation and a mock venom. Once that she has long since come to recognize and love. She placed her elbow on the counter, leaned forward, and smiled wide. “Whatever could you mean Malix?” The male grunted as he turned away.
“You’re such a pain.”
The smile morphed into a grin, her longer finger laced together. She rolled her shoulders.
“You better hurry Tori,” Annabella started. She placed a cup of coffee beside her. Tori nodded her head her fingers comb through her hair as she tied it back in a bun. “Yeah I know, the twins will kill me if I’m late.”
“You’ll be home for dinner,” Erin asked from her perch. Her brown eyes keen and bright. Tori nodded her head in return. She walked towards the door, thunderous footsteps followed behind her. “Don’t forget to pick up more milk on the way home.” It’s Malix’s voice. She waved her hand, “yeah yeah, I’ll get some n the way home. See you tonight.”
With that Tori is out the door. Headphones plugged into her ears. She smiled in her ears as she listened to the music and forgot the worlds. After all, she doesn’t have the time to think about it. After all, everyone was waiting.
She pretends not to notice the little things. The lack of energy, the paleness that creeps across his face, and the the haziness in his eyes.
If you pretend it’s not there then it can’t happen. It won’t happen. She whispers it to herself everyday. She watches him everyday.
His movements have grown slower. Annabella hasn’t noticed yet nor has Erin. She suspects it’s a good thing, but she knows they will eventually see it.
He’s getting sick.
She notices it most when he thinks he’s alone. The ragged breathing he does when he tries to catch his breath. His once strong body crumples against the doorframe. He swears beneath his breath. Whispers something to his breath and forces himself to get up again and keeps walking.
Tori notices these things but says nothing.
It’s not until the incident in the third week that she says anything at all.
He’s fallen down the steps. “Lost my footing,” he lies. She knows different. He lays in a curled up mass at the bottom of the steps, bruised but not bleeding. She sits beside him.
“You gotta tell them,” she tells him. She tries to keep the edge from her voice, the tears, and the fear.
“It’s best if they don’t know.”
She thinks it’s foolish but the look in his eye seals her silence. He wants them to believe that he’s strong for just awhile longer. After that incident it isn’t much longer. The disease, whatever it is spreads rapidly. Malix tries to leave before it gets bad but his body is too weak.
Erin and Annabella try their hardest to stop it, but to no avail. Tori watches, the thing eats him alive. She sees as he begins to fade out. She stands beside him in those last moments.
All three of them are there, constant Guardians against his loneliness. Erin and Annabella sleep tonight and Tori stands by his bedside.
Malix has gone white as a sheet. Those sharp eyes are hazy and pale, clouded by the weariness. His expression set into that of fear. He looks towards her and her to him. Her fingers entertained with him like they have so many times before.
She smiles and squeezes his hand. No words need to be said as she studies his face and he stares up at hers.
He closes his eyes, sighs, and then he is gone. She remains, a guardian against the darkness and the loneliness. Her hand wrapped around his. In the morning things will be different but tonight she can just pretend, that all is well.
Tori looked down, Annabella’s face stared up at her. Ashened skin dotted with specks of blood. “Tori, stay with me.” The words felt hollow in the air.
Screaming ripped through the world in the distance, loud but not enough to startle the hunter. She sat, stared, and watched as the world played out around her. Annabella’s expression twisted, “Tori, look at me.” Her words filled with determination. The hunter turned her head slightly, looked towards the witch. Towards those soft green eyes, that remained focused despite the circumstances.
The screaming grew louder. The smell of iron filled the air. She could see the flash of metal out of the corner of her eyes. A broken lamp lay on the floor not a few feet away. It’s shards extended into the living room.
“It’s not your fault Tori,” Annabella started. Those eyes never wavered. Tori never moved, she held her lover’s head in her lap. The limp body rested so comfortably against the ground.
“Tori…”
The words to faded away, the memories played back, and the question remained: how did this happen?
-
A few hours ago they had been sitting together in the kitchen. Annabella sipped on her coffee as she always did during these meetings. Her keen eyes scanned over the documents before her, reading every detail that Tori had gathered. Erin was at the library studying for her classes, like she did every Sunday. While Malix was out “stalking” through town, but they all knew he was waiting outside the library waiting for Erin to come back out.
Tori sat in the same seat she always did. The metal biting into her back as she kicked back and forth. She studied Annabella’s expressions with intensity. Annabella looked troubled, more so than normal. Silence drew out between them and finally Annabella spoke.
“Are you certain about this,” she asked, her low husky voice filled the air. Tori nodded her head, and turned her head to stare at the stale cup of coffee before her.
“You know what that means don’t you?”
The two let the question sit there. She knew that she didn’t have to say it. Tori never had to say it. The risks of the occupation always laid heavy upon her mind. She brushed her fingers over her lips. Her mind rested upon one fact.
“We won’t fail…” she muttered.
Annabella glanced over at her, those eyes fixed to her. She could see the emotion behind it. The glimmer of fear and love. Tori smiled her fingers slid into Annabella’s hand. Tori looked back, eyes met as the two of them exchanged words without speaking. Tori squeezed Annabella’s hands.
“I promise, we won’t fail.”
-
They stood side by side, it was always this way before the hunt. She breathed in through clenched teeth. Her body had gone rigid, she told herself it was anticipation but truly it was fear.
“We won’t fail,” she breathed, the mantra spilled from her lips over and over again. She glanced over at Annabella, the elder witch turned back to her smile, those bright white teeth flashed. The two nodded their head as Annabella leaned down. Her long limbs extended as she placed the final markings down upon the ground.
“Are you ready?”
Tori nodded her head. Annabella let her hands raise up, spoke the words. Light poured into the living room, Tori breathed in and out. Her pressure crushed against her spine. She sucked in breath in ragged movements. The heat poured from the pit of her stomach and spread out to the rest of her body.
Tori hated summons.
She reached out, her hand extended forwards to the brilliant blue lights. The static that filled the air cut against her skin and drew blood. Her green eyes fixed ahead as she spoke the words with Annabella. The sounds of their voices echoed loudly.
The noise of thunder filled the room, their voices rose as screams sounded out. Tori’s gaze never wavered from her hand as blood poured out from her middle finger. The singular droplet of blood fell from her finger. The spectacular ruby colored bead plummeted downwards and slammed into the ground.
An explosion sounded out in the house. A bright burst of light poured out to every inch of it. Tori felt the world pulled out from beneath her feet as she was pushed backwards. She screamed out as she spotted something faintly in the light. She heard the call, the screams, the whispers, and all at once it poured over her. Pain pulled over her head and her mind. She felt something heavy against her face and then she felt nothing at all.
-
She came to, the world hazy as she sat up. She looked towards Annabella, eyes adjusted to the dim lights.
“What happened?”
“It must have slipped through our grip at the last second. We will have to try again.”
It was Annabella that spoke. The woman looked tired for the first time in her life. Her red hair lay draped across her bare shoulders. Bags rested beneath her eyes as she pushed herself up. Her movements were drawn out and slow, an obvious sign of the fatigue in her muscles.
Tori groaned sitting up as she felt the soreness that clung to her. She held back a whine as she sat up. She felt something that itched at the back of her mind. She gritted her teeth together her finger laced through her long hair.
“Can we wait… like an hour or so. My head is killing me.”
Annabella shot a sympathetic glance. Her head nodded feebly for a moment.
“Not too long though… It’s aware of our presence now. The more time we give it, the more time it can come up with a plan of attack.”
Tori groaned as she stood up fully. She stumbled forward towards the counter her hand groped around for the cup of coffee, long since abandoned. “What could have gone wrong? We did everything perfectly. The spell circle, the sacrifice, and the words.”
Annabella stepped beside her. She snatched the cup out of Tori’s hands.
“It’s a powerful one, this demon. I’m not surprised that we weren’t able to summon it on the first try.”
“I suppose you’re right.”
“For next time we’ll have to kill them all.”
Tori felt something stab at her heart. Fear poured into her senses like a flood. She looked up eyes opened wide.
“What?”
“Next time we’ll have to close off all the walls.”
Tori blinked as she shook her head. The fatigue settled behind her eyes. She squeezed them shut and pressed her palms against them.
“Yeah… close off all the walls. Make the bait more alluring.”
“I’m afraid so.”
“That means more blood.”
“More than you can give.”
Tori’s eyes shot open. The voice spoke from just behind her. She turned around, wide-eyed as she looked at the very empty living room. She glanced at every corner, studied every shadow, and yet there was nothing.
“Tori?”
Tori looked back towards Annabella. A sudden jerking movement as she became aware of something that breathed just behind her. She twisted around her fist slammed into the counter. The pain shot up her arm as she let out a cry. She slunk backwards.
“So close but so far.”
Tori’s elbow shot backwards just missing Annabella. She heard a chuckle just besides her as she dove towards it. Her nails intended to dig into the source of the noise.
“Tori!”
Annabella reached out to grab Tori. Annabella’s arms wrapped protectively around Tori. The sudden grip around Tori’s wrist felt like irons. She was drawn back, nearly thrown off balance as it happened. She rested against Annabella, the warmth encompassing her.
“Tori, stop that. Cut it out!”
She breathed out, ragged breaths poured out between parted lips. Her eyes rested on the knives across the kitchen. She felt something inside of her stir. Her fingers twitched as she saw the black handles. They stood stark against the white backsplash of the kitchen.
‘Cut it out?”
She could hear whispers now. Things she could not understand but things that filled her with dread. She pressed back against Annabella. Fear began to fill into the back of her mind and grew louder and mixed with the whispers. She shut her eyes, breathed in a singular breath before she breathed out again. She knew what she had to do.
“Sorry love.”
She rocked forward and with a sudden jerk slammed the back of her head against Annabella’s chin. The witch let out a yelp as she stumbled backwards. Tori darted forwards, hands outstretched as she dove for the knives. Her hand wrapped around the hilt of the blade. She breathed out as she saw the glint.
“I gotta cut it out,” she whispered to herself over and over again.
Then again there was nothing.
The next thing she remembers are flashes. Glints of claws and blood. The screams and whimpers of someone and the feeling of flesh against flesh. It was all dotted against a blackened landscapes. Then there was the scent of iron.
Annabella lay before her. Those bright eyes peered over at her. Those lips trembled as she stared up. Her fingers twitched. Tori wept as she rushed forward towards her fallen lover. She breathed out, her eyes watered as she held Annabella.
Her lover whispered to her, tried to center her.
“Not your fault… not your fault.”
Tori’s eyes remained unfocused as she stared ahead. Knife still in hand as Annabella reached up. Her slender fingers brushed against Tori’s cheek.
“Bratling… love…” she whispered her voice wavered. Tori remained still deadly still as she stared at the door. Tori felt tears stained her cheeks as Annabella held onto her. “Please… let go of the knife…” Tori looked down towards the knife in her hand. She whispered something beneath her breath, the whispers that would plague her mind forever more.
“Bad end bad end…”
Annabella closed her eyes her weight against Tori. Tori whimpered as she clung to her dead lover. The whispers continued as she rocked back and forth. She choked back a sob as she clung to Annabella’s body. The lifeless form felt so warm. She felt the bitterness bubble up inside of her. She looked towards the bloody form.
Then the door opened.
“Beast… Nuisance, where the hell are you?”
“We brought you guys food!”
The world began to darken. The whispers grew to a deafening volume. Tori’s body stood as Annabella’s body fell to the floor.
“Cut it out…” she whispered to herself. The knife glinted as blood dripped from the knife’s blade. “Cut it out…”

🍸Wanna tell us how you felt when you met each of your lovers?
She giggles, her finger tracing around the ring of her glass.
“Well that’s simple… Anna it was a bit of fear and it was a bit of curiosity. I stood in front of her and I felt like a child. She looked so beautiful, glittered filled the air, and ashes lay upon the ground. She was like… a god. I think I feel in love with her the moment I saw her.”
She leans to the side. “Erin was… simple but it was perfect. She was… in danger that time. So small and so frail. I felt this need to protect her. Like, theis endearment. I tink in the back of my mind I knew I loved her from the moment I saw her. She was glimmering and bright… the first beacon of light I had seen in… since before that time.”
She nods her head taking a sip of whiskey from her glass.
“Malix was anger… I hated him when I first saw him. I thought he was hurting Erin… hurting my person. I felt it with every fiber of my being. I wanted to kill him, hurt him slow and make him beg…”
She chuckles, “I guess that changed somewhere along the way.”
Tori laughs, the whiskey nearly spilling over the side of the cup.
“Of course I do, I LOVE him. Seriously, wait, shoot don’t tell him that. He gets all gun shy about it but… I do love him. He’s a scary dumb stupid idiot, but he means well and all that…”
Tori trails off a faint smile on her lips.
“Yeah… I love him so much that I could kill him sometimes.”
"Why do you fight Malix all the time?" Erin says, soft yet serious. Her eyes burn for an answer. One that Tori doesn't pull out of nowhere, or shirk away with a head pat and a grin.
Tori pauses, for a moment honesty bubbles up from the pit of her stomach. She lets out a sigh as she slinks back in her chair.
“I’m afraid of him… If I pretend that I’m not. If I make him scared… then maybe he won’t realize that he could kill me any second.”
