Overview: Species History

   Kalbarae/Valharrae are ‘manufactured’ species, and have only been around for a mere 300 years, given that their own lifespans can be centuries (easily one of the longest naturally lived species) this means there’s only been a few generations since their formation. The species that was their ‘base’ had since disappeared with almost no trace once the ‘modded’ Kalbarae were being grown in mass. This has left the current species without much of a culture or history to speak of. This lack of both essential parts to a civilizations is incredibly demoralizing for most of their kind, leaving most to attempt to find personal purpose by attaching themselves to certain families (often times as bodyguards due to their imposing size and intense loyalty.) or as ‘unbiased’ leaders. This has lead to the biggest stereotyping of them as being ‘nothing but dogs’ serving powerful families, prone to violence or only suited to militaristic life if not straight up mercenaries.

You know, some of those elven servants, can’t trust them with two coppers but that lass is an odd one.  I remember when The Champion first hired her, skittish as a feral kitten! Always had one of the dwarves in the Champion’s service, can’t say I don’t prefer them to the mabari.  The Champion sends her out with a mabari–I suppose it’s certainly a way to protect your assets. I swear the damn thing knows how to haggle better than the girl does, growls over completely reasonable prices.

Elves have done well in Orlais' theaters, much to the surprise of those outside the country, but actors' lives are hotbeds of scandal and intrigue that would make even the bards blush. It is unusual at first to see elves openly tolerated and sometimes even welcomed into their betters' circles, but Orlais treats its actors as a breed apart.

Epherion and Phalnex are of the same species, Kalbarae and Valharrae (Lowland and Polar or ‘High’ Kalbarae). The only main difference between the to clans or ‘breeds’ is coloration, pelt patterns and ‘maned hoods’ as well as their voice cues (kalbarae having more of a roar/bark and sharper pronunciations, where as valharrae have more muted purrs, hums and hisses)

   What are often confused with black sclera are actually a primary iris. Kalbarae entire survival depends on their vision and it needs to be able to work both in and out of water in various lighting conditions. While they follow the same principle of any eye you’ll find, the method with which they work is still not well understood. It would seem that the primary iris (often seen in dark colors but it is not uncommon to find white) is what controls the level of light entering the eye, where the second iris controls the distance between the two lenses.
