"Her dark eyes took me in, and I wondered what they would look like if she fell in love."
augustus tulach & marie collette ermintrude dubois vs hades & persephone: a study
@emma-dubois
you promised ... please. / augustus
Octavian lets out a long and withering sigh, rubbing at his forehead. He's made a lot of promises over the years, promises that are sometimes difficult to keep just because of the way things are. Of course he promised to keep Marcus out of harms way, that his state of being was incredibly important--and it is, for why wouldn't it be? Even still, Marcus is a man, older than Octavian by, well, centuries, and he surely can't keep him from going to Egypt if he really is insistent upon it.
"I promised to keep him safe, Priscilla, and I intend on keeping that promise. This conflict with Antonius has gone on long enough, and if Marcus wants to come with me and Agrippa, then I really can't tell him no." Even though Marcus lately has really not been in any state to travel, especially not long distances, but...
"If it will make you feel better, I'll be certain that he continues to receive the best care possible. I think he just...wants to feel normal." Though he can't pretend to know Marcus' mental state at this point. Maybe he can't blame him for wanting to try and fight regardless. "You trust me, don't you?"
Some said his Pater was a sickly man. That he had always been just that. The Emperor, sure, but he had never been blessed with the best health. Some had already said him dead several times – and yet Augustus seemed to overcome every illness.
Somnus ignored these rumours. To him it was clear that his Pater would fight against this current illness, too, and come out victorious. Though a little help – beside the doctors caring for him – could never be wrong.
And so the young heir sneaked through the corridors and slipped into his parents’ chambers, carrying a plate he himself had put together. Filled with figs from Mater’s gardens, that he so loved. And oranges. Usually, Somnus pretended he needed help to peel them, it was an old game back from his childhood that he still upheld. But this time, he had not just peeled the fruits but taken care to get rid of all the small white strings of the separated pieces.
“Pater?”, he asked, waiting a moment before he was allowed to step closer, so he could kneel down and set the plate down beside Augustus, “I know you will get well again, soon… but I also heard the best medicine can be fruit grown under the warm sun.”
It's true that Augustus has been sickly most of his life, facing various illnesses and other chronic things since childhood. He's faced his deathbed several times at this point and has always managed to come out on the other side relatively unscathed. Not many can say the same, and he chalks this up to a healthy worship of Apollo. He always tries to keep himself in the god's good graces, and thus has taught Somnus the same.
Thankfully it's little more than cold this time, something he struggles with during the transition to winter. When Somnus enters, he had been slightly dozing off, staying in bed at Livia's behest. She insisted, saying that she would take care of things so long as he focused on getting better. He will always trust her, so how can he say no?
When his son approaches the bed, he blinks a few times, coughing into a handkerchief. "Ah, Somnus, you have always been so thoughtful," he says as he pushes himself up into a sitting position. It feels as if his head is about to pop with how congested he is, but he'll be fine. "Sit with me a little, though keep your distance. I'd hate for you to catch this."
”don't leave me here . please . “ for Augustus
Making demands || Accepting
Augustus seems to hesitate for a moment, pondering just what to do. He has yet to debut his new heir to the people, fearful that doing so might bring the evil eye or some other sort of poor luck upon him. He loves Somnus for he is his son, and he only wants the best for him, yet...it has to be done eventually, doesn't it?
"Alright, Somnus, then lets get you dressed, hm?" He takes his son by the shoulder and guides him back into his room, opening his closet to look at all his fine tunics. What would be good enough to show him off to the world? Augustus clicks his tongue, turning to Somnus. "Well, what do you think? This will be the first time anyone has seen you in public. I want you to look your best. Do you have an opinion?"
You are growing up far too fast, he thinks. Somnus is still young, but these days will soon be gone. Then what? He doesn't want to think about it at all. "Come now, your mater will be waiting for us soon, and you know how impatient she can be," he says with a laugh. "But when we get back, you have to go back to your lessons, alright?"

"you need to rest, you don’t have to do it all today." - for Augustus
"Hm, what's this, my own son telling me to rest? You sound just like your mother sometimes." Augustus' tone may be chiding, but it's obvious that he's teasing by the smirk on his face. Somnus' concern is endearing, he'll admit. There aren't many aside from Livia who would check on his well-being. Augustus will admit that he pushes himself from time to time, but if he puts things off, then they just pile up into something uncontrollable.
Ever meticulous, ever the perfectionist. It's how he's always been. "Perhaps it doesn't need to be done today, but if I put it off, then it will just be another thing on the list of things that I must do. The work of an emperor is never done, Somnus. Once you take your place on the throne, you'll find yourself having these late nights just as much as I do."
