That couldn't be right, clearly she misheard him, or that he was wrong. Of course, he was wrong. Why even entertain the thought that what he said was true? But then Strange said it again, softer than before, words both kind and cruel, aiming straight for the heart. Rosie felt her throat tighten, choking on every refusal--on every prayer that remained silent as she just stared at him.
No. No. Nononononono.
Her hands flew to her chest where her--no, where his heart was tucked ever so safely inside. But her heart? Still and silent within him, her Otto, who died alone without her. Oh! She managed to release a strangled cry, tumbling past locked lips, laced with grief and agony. He had died without ever hearing her say she loved him once last time, without a final kiss, without all the tenderness she could give. All the strength drained from her, knees buckling as she collapsed to the floor, tears cascading down her cheeks. Rosie barely felt Strange's awkward touch at her shoulder, hands coming to cover her face as she sobbed, broken cries pouring out of her now. He died in a strange world without her beside him. And in that moment she died with him.
