and Miis! :'-)Â
Tomodachi Life!
The sun was going down and Skip looked a little scary.
âWe should go somewhere,â Violet said. âItâs getting dark now.â
âI donât know if I can.â
âI want to show you where I like to sit. Itâs just down the street.â She opened her bedroom window and took a deep breath. The stuffy heat of the day had been replaced by a cool breeze. Summer evenings are her favorite.
Skip wasnât really in form to go outside. She felt like a moose. She didnât feel as weird as usual, though, and Violet was already pulling a clean shirt over her head. Maybe her head could allow her to go outside, just this once. It was dark, after all, and she was going back to Juniorâs tomorrowâtime with Violet is the most important time.
âI guess itâll be okay.â
⌠⌠âŚ
âCan you jump fences?â
Violet was visibly excited. Skip couldn't remember the last time she had seen Violet like this.
âYeah, I think so.â
âThereâs this shortcut hereââshe pointed at a wooden fence past Juniorâs parentsâ houseââand you have to jump the fence past that backyard. I can help you if you need me to, though.â
Skip took a moment to think. âI should be fine.â
⌠⌠âŚ
 âViolet.â
âHmm?â
âThis grass is so tall and awful.â Skip shivered as the weeds tickled her legs.
âIâm sorry. Itâs itchy, but I like it a lot anyhow.â
⌠⌠âŚ
Once the field cleared and Skip could feel her legs again, she let out a huge sigh. âThatâs better.â
Violet didnât hear her, though. Sheâd gone on ahead to the creek and had managed to crawl up a tree to sit on a thick branch. âIsnât it nice?â she called out. Skip couldnât help but smile. Â

It was getting dark and Violet was restless. The season was changing, the air getting colder, the days getting shorter, and she could no longer go out in just shorts and a t-shirt. Mother bought her new shoes and sweaters and they all made her feel stuffy and suffocated.Â
âIâm going to the creek,â she said, pulling one of Elijahâs sweatshirts over her head.Â
âPut on shoes,â Elijah said. He gently pulled Violetâs hair out of the neck of the sweatshirt and smoothed it over with a gentle touch.
âNo.â
âSocks, at least.â
âNo. They make me feel bad.âÂ
âAlright. Donât get in the water. Itâs too cold for that now.â
Violet nodded. Mother could have said the exact same thing and it would have passed straight through her head without any thought at all, but ElijahâViolet always listened to him.
She left quietly, as to not alert and worry Mother. She walked by Juniorâs houseâhis parentsâ houseâand his mother gave her a friendly wave from the front porch. âTell my son I said hello. He wonât have a thing to do with me these days.â
âMe either,â said Violet.
âItâs that girl.â
Violet was silent.
âHave a nice evening, sweetheart. Be careful.â
Violet was silent still and Juniorâs mother continued tending to her flowers.
âIâll tell Junior,â Violet said finally. She decided to cross by that house, hopping the fence in the backyard and stumbling as she landed in the thick, cool grass. The creek wasnât too far away and this shortcut was actually more trouble than it was worth, but Violet enjoyed.
This town was very naturalâthatâs what everyone always said about it. It boasted large stretches of untouched wilderness and Violet loved the best and the worst of it. Sticker weeds, grass that reached her knees, and precariously situated rocks that she loved to hop about and nap on if the weather permitted.
She admitted to herself that she should have worn shoes when she stopped on a jagged stone that dug into the side of foot and drew a bit of blood. Elijah was always worried and he was always right.
When she got to the creek, she realized that she was not alone. A boy was sitting quietly under her favorite treeâher favorite tree to climb in, however, not sit under, so he didnât bother her at all.
In fact, the boy was a friend.
Violet called out his name and gave him a fright. âHey, Violet,â he said, clearing his throat and trying to regain his composure as quickly as possible.
Violet played along. âHi, Dominic.â
âItâs a little chilly and⌠youâre not wearing shoes. And youâre bleeding!â
âOh.â Violet glanced at her foot. âItâs fine.â
âYou should disinfect it or youâoh. This must be how Elijah talks to you all the time, huh?â
âNot all the time. But still. A lot.â
Dominic smiledâperhaps. Violet couldnât quite tell; His face was shaded by the loose, overhanging branches above him. A single leaf fell in his lap and he absent mindedly folded it in half. âDo you want to sit down?â
She did.
âHowâs school going for you so far?â
She shrugged.
âYou havenât been going.â
âYou already knew that.â
âYeah, but I wanted you to say it. For once, I would like to hear something from you. Why arenât you going to school? Youâll get kicked off the team at this rate. If something wrong? Is someone giving you trouble?â
Violet pulled a hitchhiker off of Dominicâs jacket and pressed it between her fingers. âNo,â she replied after some hesitation.
âThen whatâs the deal?â
âNothing. I donât know.  I donât care. Itâs just hard to get out of bed some days.â
âYou ever tell Elijah that?â
âNo.â
âBecause he doesnât ask you too many questions, does he?â
âAfter a certain point he starts accepting just yes or no.â
âMaybe you should see a doctor.â
Violet shook her head. She reached out and gently placed her hand against Dominicâs cheek. âDominic.â
âWhat?â
âYouâre driving me crazy.â
Dominic look perplexed for just a second, but then he smiled and took Violetâs small hand in his own. âYeah. Sorry. I just want you to do well. I donât mean in school or on the field. I just mean⌠in general. You know? So does Elijah. Your parents. Even⌠Junior.â
âHe hates me,â Violet sighed. She closed her eyes and shrugged, slowly pulling her hand away from Dominicâs.
âNo he doesnât. You should spend some alone time with that guy, let him talk on and on about whatever for a little while. There is absolutely no one on this planet that he hates as much as himself. I wouldnât worry about him. Or anyone else.â
They were almost completely covered in darkness except for  a sliver or two of dusky light making its way through the trees. It illuminated only half of everything Violet wanted to seeâDominicâs smile and the mascot on his hoodie and just him, but she still enjoyed the view.Â
Wake up, Elijah, and resurface.
Butâhe is so, so tired. Someone has been holding him down and his body aches. But there is Violet, with her slightly downturned lips. She is wearing her baseball helmet. Wake up, Elijah, wake up.
âWake up,â Violet says. She is very quiet.
Elijah.
Wake up.
âElijah!â
He can feel himself taking control. His hands, his eyes, his voice. They belong to him again. He can make a fist, clutching onto Violetâs coat, and he can blink, blink, blink, nervously, clearing his blurred vision. He can speakââWhere⌠and, uh, wh-what?â is all he can manage, but itâs something.
âAre you okay?â Violet asks. âI punched you in the face.â
âWhat? Why?â He tries to move but is seized by the soreness in his stomach. He lets himself crumble, and realizes that his head is in Violetâs lap.
âAnd I hit you with my bat! Right in the stomach.â
âViolet, why did you do that?!â
âYou were trying to hurt me!â
As if Elijah could let him believe that for one second. He chuckles and his body tenses up. âYou really got me good, Violet,â he mumbles, turning over on his side and facing away from her. âWhat was I doing?â
âYou were really scary and your eyes were dead. I hit you until all the meanness was gone. Iâm sorry.â Violet leans down and kisses his cheek. âIâm sorry, Eli.âÂ
