hi! i was just wondering if you knew where to find some merlin icons, if it's not too much bother? i can never seem to find many!
its not a bother! i find most of my merlin icons on livejournal. here are some posts from awesome icon makers i have under my bookmarks:first off, you should check out everything by castlesandfire, orange-corner, psychedelic-flu, killcolor, wicked-signs, silk-roads, shades-of-lights, polaroid-this, stormfronticons, landofmerlin, and magicmachine (this one is a multi-member community. so you’ll have to specifically look at which maker is posting the icons for proper credit!)Â
all of the above lead to their specific merlin tag but a lot of posts are also multifandom icons. so you’ll probably have to sort through them to find the merlin icons!

do you have screencaps from merlin s1-3, and if so, where did you find decent ones??
i usually screencap s1-s3 from my own dvds when i want decent quality!
buuuuutt:
♠ grande-caps has all the seasons. (but they’re a bit selective with their caps, i think, cause seasons 1-3 only have like 600 caps per episode, still a great source for screencaps though!)
but for alternates:
♠ kissmegoodbye.net has seasons 1, 4, 5♠ screencap.net has seasons 3-5♠ gallicka-screens has a few zip downloads that still work, i believe. mostly seasons 4 and 5. but they have the first half of season 3 though. simple gif coloring tutorial asked by anon. i usually work off 4 basic layers when i color my gifs and then add to them according to whatever i’m coloring. this tutorial has the 4 + 1 (2 if you count copying a frame to add an effect). i am really crap at explaining so i’m sorry if this is sloppy as heck. this tutorial also requires a basic knowledge of photoshop and knowing where to find and add layers. also, am using colin’s face because i can. and this. scene. always. :’))))
♠okay first, here’s a beginner’s guide on how to make gifs just in case you need it (cause this tutorial also requires a basic knowledge of gif-making)
â™ i use cs5
♠the 4 base layers i usually use are curves, selective coloring, color balance, and vibrance. (all these layers are under “new adjustment layer” under the general “layer” option)
♠screencaps of how each step looks in the “(x)”
1. i load the files into stack, crop it the way i want, sharpen it (a good sharpening script tutorial), make frames from layers, and then reverse it.
2. copy the first layer, add a layer (vector) mask (in case you need to delete certain parts of the copied layer) and set it to gaussian blur + 4 in radius and then set it to soft light 50% (the highlighted part of the layer, not the mask). (X) i got that little tip from a psd HERE. this can be a bit tricky on gifs since they move, so you may have to delete certain parts on the layer mask if your gif is moving too much so it’s not just stuck on that one frame. (idk if that made sense, hopefully it does if you encounter that problem on your gif) Â
3. add a curves layer. (X)
4. add a selective color layer and just set it to soft light 100%. i didn’t do anything else to it.
5. add a color balance layer. i usually only mess around with the midtones on a color balance layer. (X)
6. add a vibrance layer. (X)
7. add a channel mixer layer set to 70% opacity and 50% fill. (X) [red (X), green (X), blue (X)]
that’s it! well, for this one. again, it differs for whatever you’re coloring. and this one was pretty easy since he in an outside setting. also note, that this gif is big, so when working with a smaller version, you’ll have to adjust accordingly.Â
is the way you color edits or picspams (is that what they're called?) different to how to color gifs? i'm such a novice at all of this
yup. generally, for me at least, coloring edits/picspams is different to coloring gifs. you have more freedom with edits/picspams because you don’t have to worry about the size limit here on tumblr when you upload. on gifs the size limit is 1mb on single gifs, and 2mb on multiple gifs 245px in width. (idk if that made any sense since you said you were new to this so i’m sorry if it doesn’t hakjdfhsd). also, most gifmakers tend to try and keep their coloring as simple as possible because of the size limit, and cause no matter how high quality your settings are, gifs will always come out somewhat distorted when you save them. not like edits/picspams where they look exactly the same as the original when you save them. (unless you’re one of those super talented gifmakers who must use sorcery surely to make their gifs so super colorful and gorgeous and effortless).Â
