I love it when media fucks up the wording of the Rasputin disclaimer and ends up with shit like "any resemblance to people or locations living or dead is coincidental". I'd love to know what committing libel against a dead location would entail.
Whenever I see the phrase "foul magic" in fantasy media I have to try very hard not to think about how one definition of "foul" is "having an unpleasant smell", because it's challenging to take a character seriously when their title is Master of the Stinky Arts.
Just got reminded of the person who wanted me to justify why I would write something āthat wayā when they hadnāt read it. That is still one of my more frustrating interactions because they really wanted me to reassure them that I was a good person, that the fic wasnāt as bad as the synopsis made it sound and I was just like. No?
Salt was hugely important before refrigeration, and one of the ways of getting salt was from the sea or from brine springs. There were a few ways of doing this, which depended on the natural resources available in the area. You could put the saltwater into a large, flat pool and wait on dry air and the sun to do evaporation until there was no water left and you just had the salt, or you could boil saltwater using enormous quantities of fuel to get rid of the water.
But in places where big pools weren't feasible, they did everything in their power to reduce the amount of fuel required for the production of salt, because fuel takes a lot of time and effort to collect and drives up costs.
Enter the graduation tower!
The idea is that you take some source of salty water, pump it up to the top of a wooden tower filled with brushwood (typically blackthorn), then let it trickle down, which greatly increases evaporation by maximizing surface area and exposing the water to the wind along the way. When the saltwater reaches the bottom, it's saltier than it was, and you can send it through again until it's reached the point of saturation. If you do this with ocean water, you can reduce the amount of fuel needed by a factor of ten.
Plus it looks and sounds awesome - these were sometimes called thorn towers.
And at the start of the 20th century, when other forms of salt production had skyrocketed in efficiency, the graduation towers began to be used for healthcare, because as you might imagine, the air next to the graduation tower is very salty, more than it is next to the seaside. From what I can find it seems like the main thing it does is thin mucus, though there are a lot of other health claims.
There are still a few working thorn towers that you can go visit, mostly in Germany or Poland, but they're either historical curiosities keeping a tradition alive, or health and wellness centers, distilling down a brine spring for supposed special properties.

You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
There's something to be said for blocking someone on social media as an act of compassion. Sometimes I'll see someone popping up in my notes over and over again where it's like "okay, buddy, seeing my posts on your dash appears to cause you a great deal of emotional distress, so why don't we make it so you don't have to?"

im swimming at the lake and accidentally kicked a fish. this has never happened in my many years of swimming. sorry man
there used to be an old mine near where i'm staying. it's flooded now, so all that's left is this round opening in the rock filled with water. the rock walls surrounding it are steep, and people like to climb up and jump into it. the water is dark that even though it's crystal clear, you can't see the bottom. it's just this endless black void beneath you.
well, one night a friend and i decided to jump in without bothering to check the water first. it was late, nobody else was around, and we figured it'd be fine.
it was not fine.
we hit the water and immediately realized we'd landed in what i can only describe as tadpole soup. i am not exaggerating when i say it felt like swimming through boba tea that was 70% pearls. every stroke meant hundreds of tiny, squishy little bodies slipping between my fingers.
1/10 experience. one point awarded solely for the fact that it was, technically, an experience.
