The world of Arknights is insane (its on pc now so I can play). This is not the post I was intending to create today, but my other projects are taking longer than expected. Anyway, I absolutely adore when fiction steals names wholesale from the real world, maybe changing a little bit like a letter or two but overall keeping them identical. And Fire Emblem does this a little bit with places like Macedon, but Arknights is so unsubtle its crazy. I'm not sure if it's an English localization specific thing but there is just so much.
I'm sure there's plenty of stuff my Euro/American-centric education did not prime me to catch, but there's also stuff that I'm not sure most people anywhere would catch. There's the blatant stuff like Rhodes Island being the name of the land ship and also just a really weird way to make the US state a plural noun. There's also Columbia, though I haven't really seen what it's about. Or more stereotyping things like Siracusa being run by the mafia or Iberia having a fucking inquisition. Some are less obvious, but Aegir is seemingly named after the Aegean Sea, or Chernobog and Chernobyl. Some I haven't figured out, like Laterano, or seem to be thematically named rather than ripped whole cloth like Ursus effectively meaning bear but seemingly being the Terran version of Soviet Russia.
Anyway none of that prepared me to see, as one of the first things I saw in the game, the name Raythean. On some digging through the wiki I learn that the company Raythean Industries is a fucking arms manufacturer. Now, for a lot of people I'm sure they didn't blink at this, but I immediately recognized the name because Raytheon is a real life arms manufacturer and a very common hiring point for fresh mechanical engineer graduates. Naturally, I found this really fucking funny. Because it's one thing to lift the names of regions or places and make overblown facsimiles of the iconic parts of their history, its so very different to just drop a real company in the world and change a single letter. I want to know what the fuck else there is here, will I encounter other thinly veiled references to the military industrial complex? What about big pharma? Will I find Pfuzer, the competitor to Rhodes Island? This game is a fucking riot.

I wish Arknights events and story was broken up into more stages, because I rarely have time for more than a stage or two because of how long each vn section is. It’s really good and I don’t want to skip it but it’s quite a bit of reading per stage that takes a while for like not much actual gameplay.
Let’s be real, I just want Whislash, but I’m actually reading the Maria Nearl event as I go, and it’s really good. I always mix up which one is Maria and which one is Margaret.
The main issue is that reading the plot takes a long time which I often don’t have, causing my progress to stall. And it usually doesn’t help with building operators which is disappointing.

I will make a formal Endfield gripes part 3 later, but for fuck’s sake, stop making the height of Tangtang’s emotional arc about the daft dead weight tone deaf Endmin.
Perlica the hell do you mean you find it hard to believe that anyone would get killed in the Wuling-Qingbo Stockade conflict just because they’re both of Yanese descent?? The fact that the notion of bad blood between two communities leading to fights and deaths is supposed to be shocking is a sign that the writing quality is fucking atrocious. It’s the most common kind of conflict, what the hell are you talking about.
Not to throw around words like ludonarrative dissonance or anything but there’s something mildly existential about the fact that Valley IV will never meaningfully improve and will be perpetually stuck in a state of post-disaster reconstruction.
It’s a property of open world games that is just always a consideration when you can still enter a map after the main quest. Not that it always has to happen, but in a game that cuts so many costs on animations and voice acting, I’m not really expecting a whole second map with partial or complete reconstruction.
Still, Endfield Industries does fuck all when the Endmin is not directly intervening.
I got both Rossi and Arclight super quick, so now I still have like 80ish pulls for later. Very resource limited for LMD and materials, so I won’t have a Rossi team for quite a while but Arclight is almost up to par with the rest of my Avywenna team.

This one is a strange one, I've been plotting out a story involving an operator OC named Ink. This is kind of setting the stage so I don't have to go into much detail and derail the plot when I write it. I structured this like it's a wiki page/operator file I think, for earlier operators that had less written about them. So yeah, please enjoy if you think it's interesting. I have a second OC that I might make one for as well, but we will have to see. The Archive Files are tough to write when you don't have any source material.
Operator File: Paint
Physical Description:
Ink is a pale, lithe (Lung?) woman, standing at about 162cm. She has white horns/antlers protruding from fluffy black hair. Her irises are also a pale white with a deep black outline. Two black lines encircle her neck, at different angles so they cross twice.
Her hands and forearms are stained black, with white streaks twisting aimlessly across them. These are not natural markings but tattoos that are slowly beginning to fade from age. Her frame is slight and her body is toned, though not in a way that would result from regimented training.
Her tail is a similarly stark contrast, though unlike her body it is a deep black with white hair. On it there are quite a few scars of old cuts and scrapes.
Basic Information:
Legal Name: Unknown
Personal Identifier: Ink
Code Name: Paint
Gender: Female
Combat Experience: 10 Years
Place of Birth: Siracusa
Date of Birth: Unknown
Age: Unknown (Estimated 20-25 Years Old)
Race: Lung (Presumed)
Height: 162 cm
Weight: 45 kg
Infection Status: No Originium crystals are visible on the surface of the body, but confirmed infected by medical examination
Physical Strength: Standard
Mobility: Excellent
Endurance: Excellent
Tactical Acumen: Standard
Combat Skill: Excellent
Originium Arts Assimilation: Flawed
Profile:
An escaped cage fighter from Siracusa, raised from a young age to partake in high stakes combat sports. After being assisted in her escape by Operator Penance, Ink seemingly followed her to Rhodes Island, leading to her discovery. Despite a wealth of combat experience for her seemingly young age, she dislikes violence and has been training as an Engineering Operator.
Clinical Analysis:
Imaging tests show the indistinct outlines of internal organs, obscured by abnormal shadows. Originium granules detected in the circulatory system. The subject is confirmed to be infected with Oripathy.
[Cell-Originium Assimilation] 6%
Ink's infection status appears to be a recent development. She shows no signs of infection on her body as of yet.
[Blood-Originium Crystal Density] 0.14u/L
Her infected status remained unknown until her initial examination. Being at an early stage of progression, Ink shows no signs of physical or mental deterioration due to her infection.
Notes:
Ink was initially suspected of being a Fragment of Sui due to her distinct arm tattoos and Lung features that resemble the Sui siblings. This hypothesis has been debunked through a conversation and meeting with Operator Ling.
She has demonstrated a striking indifference to hunger and pain, though has confirmed she does feel it. Monitor closely, she may not report injuries or infection progression voluntarily.

Keep separated from Operators Specter, Lappland, and W for her own safety.

Archive File 1
Paint's past is unclear beyond what she volunteered to the Doctor and Kal'tsit. She herself seems to know little beyond the broad strokes, not remembering anything before the ring. It is believed she contracted Oripathy recently, either due to unsafe conditions in Siracusa or exposure while traveling.
The nature of her upbringing has left her unable to adapt to life at Rhodes Island. Paint does not eat, sleep, or rest without express permission from those she believes to be her superiors.
Due to her wealth of reported combat experience and operator availability, Operator Lappland was assigned to proctor her combat assessment. This has been noted as a mistake, thankfully there were several capable medical and combat operators on standby.
Archive File 2
Paint's quiet nature may indicate a difficulty with languages. While conversationally capable in Siracusan, her Victorian and Yanese are limited to a few short phrases each. Likewise, her reading and writing abilities are lacking due to her upbringing in the Cage. Despite the communication difficulties, she can seemingly intuit what is meant by simple and moderately complex instructions.
Operators Ling and Penance have taken charge of Paint's linguistic instruction between operations, and have already begun to make substantial progress.
Her natural curiosity seems to have greatly assisted in her learning of both new languages and orginium engineering.
Archive File 3
Sparring with Ink has been an enlightening experience. She demonstrates immense creativity in combat, utilizing both the room and her own body to their fullest.
It feels like she can attack from anywhere, using her tail to change both the range and tempo to her advantage.
Her moves are rough, lacking in any proper training, but in a fist-fight I believe I would be hard pressed to win.
Note: Ink does not seem to hold back while sparring.

My marks? They are for fighting, make me worth watching.
In the cage most fighters had a signature, these are mine. You need to stand out, paint- no, draw in a crowd. If people watch you fight, you go less hungry, feel less pain.
Good fighters win in the cage. Better fighters survive by being recognized, bring back spectators. If you cannot, you die in a fight, or worse, die outside one.
How I got them? No, they are always there, they are me. The marks are why I am Ink.
