It gets me in the Downsizing Game, that every instance of Nao getting tricked/taken advantage of in the first half becomes vital to the eventual endgame.
Nao gets duped by Fukunaga and locked out of the vote exchange? She'll end the game as the only character allowed to vote freely since everyone else is locked in an M-ticket contract.
Nao loses that Light and Dark game with Fukunaga and gets scammed out of 30 million? Well, not only does it set Nao up for a rematch where she can win 10 votes, but it also gives her a great story to tell the other players when she goes to get the votes from them.
Nao's not allowed to make her case at the beginning? Fine. She'll make it at the end when she has all the money and the power and her statement will have actual material impact.

OH! And if my new alphabetic syllabary takes off, then instead of hundreds of blocks for different ideograms, a case of printing blocks could include dozens of copies of each letter, thus allowing for more rapid deployment and a much more efficient storage of the printing blocks!

that first kiss is a waiting game
Strictly speaking, I don't think Akiyama would have held it against Nao had she decided to keep her share of the money. I don't even think he expected her to return it. To him, stealing the whole amount was a) likely a form of punishment for Fujisawa and b) a way of simplifying the logistics, and Nao walking away with the money would have been an acceptable outcome.
That said, if Nao hadn't returned the money, Akiyama probably wouldn't have helped her further. He might have expected her to pay the fee to drop out and deal with the consequences on her own.
However, the fact that Nao not only returns the money but does it without hesitation is what keeps Akiyama around, into the second game and going forward. That Nao returned the money to her teacher is what makes her worth protecting.
The Liar Game anime opening animation is just a showcase of Nao having a really, really, shitty time.
I stumbled across your “simple charm” works from Shepherds of Haven and they are so beautifully written! The characters feel so lifelike and I really love the dynamic of your MC and Halek, it feels so comfortable and lovely but filled with subtle yearning. Are we giving him a regular name? I think that’s funny, since he obviously wants to live like a stray. We. He stared a little longer at that word, hearing it in Kalmia’s gently amused voice. Then, the cat in question pushed against his free hand, demanding attention.
