Morning kayaking with my daughter on American Lake. I love kayaking American Lake because it's so big it never gets old. If you launch from the Lakewood end remember you have to have a parking pass that comes with a fishing licennse or you need a Discover Pass. I like the Discover Pass because it covers all the parks and places you launch from.We launched from the park by the Veterans Hospital, and you don't need a pass there, but if you park in the launch parking you have to pay. February volunteering at the wheelchair tournament going on all weekend. Was amazing to watch these athletes! Tacoma is filled with volunteering opportunities of all kinds. First kayaking of the year, and what a perfect day for it. American Lake has many places to launch watercrafts. We shored up and had a little picnic along our way, and I left another rock. Yup, it's parks week for me. Nice wide, paved trail (.9 mile) around the lake, extended outer loop through the forest with long foot bridge, playground, picnic shelters, lots of benches, two massive, fenced, off-leash dog parks, year round restrooms, and a fishing dock. Fishing is only permitted for youth. This place reminds me of the old sitcom Sandford & Son. The back lot is usually packed to the rafters with a little of everything. Need a toilet? They have like 30 of them! lol The front building is pretty small when compared to the Goodwills we have, but treasures can be found. Always something interesting going on in T-town. Sunday we were driving by the Grand Staircase and saw this. Of course I had to stop and find out what was going on. Half had signs and the people next to them had tv's that were playing all the horrible ways the animals we eat for food are kept. If you're unfamiar with how our food is raised there are lots of great documentaries. The one that got my daughter and her friend to become vegetarians when they were about 10 is Food Inc. I stayed and chatted for a spell with one of the people on the side who were involved. If you are a Vegan or Vegetarian I learned of an app called Happy Cow.
