We give Oda a lot of heat about how he portrays women sometimes (rightfully so). But at least he didn’t make his guys into the super toxic alpha male archetype so often shown in other media. I think this is part of the reason why One Piece has such soul as a story.

This is also why I despise powerscalers. Those guys whined Roger had a crush on Shakky bc according to them this makes him less of a top dog. Apparently, in order to be manly and strong one needs only stoic machismo and no other emotions. I hate this and I’m pretty sure all those guys are incels who never truly appreciated OP.

I know the light novels are semi-canon at best, but this bit where Shanks tries to scare little Uta with Whitebeard as the boogeyman will never not be funny to me. So in my head, it’s canon.

Like, SIR, we BOTH know the scariest thing that could happen is WB actually stealing baby Uta to raise her better than you did. I’m sorry, I love you to death but facts are facts.

Not to be that person who defends the evil garlic, BUT - I really hate how the power scaler community takes his L against Rocks as a certain sign that he’s weak. Like, at this point Rocks is in his prime. He looks to be somewhere between his 40s and 50s. Going off of appearance Garling is about 30ish. And we know that neither BM, WB, nor Roger are yet in their prime during God Valley. This is why the whole time period surrounding GV is known as the ‘Era of Rocks’. It’s obvious a lot of the now-legends become much stronger afterwards. Smh why can’t people have basic reading comprehension.

Not to mention, God knights as a whole seem to be suffering from carelessness because of their immortality. I bet before GV they have never encountered a person who can seriously injure them and prevent them from regenerating. It’s rather likely that GV will make them up their game. Literally, it’s the thing that makes the most sense. Fucking fuck, I hate the toxic X and Reddit communities. These people would do anything for clout. So happy tumblr exists.

Also, why does this MF Garling look so hot👀 like I have never been attracted to genocidal racists before but Oda is really trying to change that

- he inspired him as a kid, protected him, but then went away and they haven’t seen each other for years.

- a mentor is someone who actively guides or teaches another, and they have regular interactions. A mentor offers lessons and structural guidance to the protagonist.

- an idol is someone admired from a distance, serving as a source of inspiration/motivation.

I think it’s quite obvious the mentor figure is Rayleigh, not Shanks.

And if someone is so bent on following all the clichés, at least notice how mentors who die in stories are quite often old people, talking 60+. They end up dead because their time is up; they don’t have much else to offer, other than their wisdom/knowledge. Once they share this with the new generation, they are ready to depart the world.

This is why in Naruto Jiraya died but Kakashi survived. Think also Dumbledore, Obi-Wan and so, so many more… these are all grandpas, and there is a reason for that.

I also think Shanks has a lot more to offer to the story. Like, Oda went through the trouble of setting up his family history and including his father and brother into the spread with the 12 people who will impact the story’s ending. All of this to just become BB victim? Come on.

Plus, do we really need more angst for Luffy? Surely, the fact that BB played a main role in Ace’s capture and consequent death is enough. Another scenario where Luffy loses a precious person for angst will be just a repetition of Marineford. Also, Marineford was so impactful because it was unexpected, unlike this Shanks scenario that everyone keeps talking about. Let’s also not forget BB currently has Garp. So it would be quite ridiculous if we keep getting the same thing (all of Luffys important people, outside of his crew, taken down by BB) over and over again.
